Chile
*Tunnel closed.
.....
This is the parking lot to the tunnel.
——-
From here the road up to the tunnel gets narrower, and up further it gets pretty rough with lots of big holes. Manageable in a 4WD (someone came with high clearance 2WD) but limited places to turn around so not ideal for big rigs. Best to walk or bike up - few tourists on bikes coming up here from town.
Update 2023. Not possible to drive up for big rigs. Maybe 4wd, but road is in really bad shape, almost no place to turn around.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Yes, they say the tunnel is closed, but you can still ride a bike trough it. Or walk. Riding up with a car I would not recommend. The road is in too bad shape. Even with 4wd.
Report Check-InTunnel is closed because of rock fall. At least that’s what they reha you at the entrance gate 2 km before where ski pay 3000 P/Pers
Report Check-InAmazing climb through a gorge up to the ridge line above San Pedro de Atacama and Valle de la Muerte. Still free here. The rock formations and salt deposits are spectacular.
Hike from SPA to this place, up along the ridge, down the giant sand dune and through the Valle de la Muerte back is around 20km. Valle de la Muerte is paid entry (3000CLP each).
Report Check-InThis is the parking lot to hike/bike up to the tunnel. Don’t drive further by car, even there is no gate!
From here it’s about 1,5 km one way (100 m in height) to the tunnel entrance. Another 1 km (100m in height) up to the iOverlander point “tunnel and views”).
