Description

The Guias de Montanas shop was closed so we came here to organize a hike to Laguna Glaciar. They usually offer it as a 2-3 day trek but we read that people do it one day, so they accommodated us no problem. We decided to leave our car at Altai Oasis in Sorata because 1) we weren't sure how safe it was to leave it at the trailhead (...it's totally fine) and 2) you *need* a guide to go to Laguna Glaciar. The trail is not clear. (You don't, however, need a guide to hike to Laguna Challata, which is the first lake you pass on the hike to Glaciar and is only ~45min from the trailhead. So you could easily drive up to the trailhead, camp, and do it all on your own.) We rode in a Toyota Corolla taxi up to the trailhead, so 4x4 is not required.

The hike to Laguna Glaciar was ~8 hours total and climbed ~4,000ft (1,200m). It's tough but if you love hiking you'll enjoy it. We paid 250Bs for the guide and 150Bs each way for the taxi, but you could probably negotiate both of those costs. Enjoy!
