Description

A charity tour organisation who use volunteer (but well trained) guides to run tours and camping trips to the volcanoes surrounding León. All profits go to charities supporting the street kids and tackling drug/glue-sniffing challenges.

We volunteered here for 3 months and it was an amazing experience. Guests often told us it was the highlight of their trip.

León is only place in the world you can board (sledge) down a volcano! Combining this with a 2 day camping trip (El Hoyo) is very popular, as is camping just below the rim of the smoking and lava filled Volcan Telica. There are also more and less strenuous tours available.

This is the only charity tour operator and they offer the best trips in the city. All equipment is provided - you just need to bring enthusiasm.

León is a fantastic vibrant city full of nightlife and cheap eats thanks to all the students. The Maribios volcano range is just awesome - where else can you stand on the edge of a 120m vertical drop into a highly active crater and see lava with not even a warning sign in sight?!

Unfortunately there isn't a good official overlander spot but there are many roads that are wide enough to park on (be warned this is not a quiet city so expect fireworks, and the twice daily air raid siren!), or stay in a cheap hostel ($20-25 for a private room) and pay a buck to leave the van in the parqueo.

Nicaragua is the land of lakes and volcanoes so don't miss a chance to explore and let your dollars improve the lives of kids who struggle to get a daily meal.

We booked a tour for sandboard the Cerro negro, for 30USD. It is a bit expensive but the money is going for different project to help kids at school by providing books, furnitures or even by paying their scholarship.
Transportation is included, some snacks, pictures, two rides of the volcano and a shirt.
All the guides are volunteers and they even have to pay for their own food and room. We were happy to give our money to a good organism.

did the volcano boarding with them and it was a blast
the benefit is you arrive as the first ones at the volcano, so no waiting
they are the only ones to let you go down twice
and you get some delicious veggie burritos for lunch
the price is a few bucks more than other operators but it goes to the local kids
we had luck with a small group of only 6 people compared to big foot with almost 20 persons
