Description

Moderator note: Place deleted because of safety concerns.

Pulled off Hwy 9 heading to San Augustín and pulled off on the right into what seems to have once been a quarry and now has 4x4 tracks. Quiet with a nice view of the valley below.

Latest Check-Ins

We stopped here at 8am to have breakfast and within 20min the police came by to tell us the area is unsafe. They said assaults are known to happen here.

Report Check-In

We needed a spot to stop just for the night, on our way from Tikal to Antigua. This spot was high on the hill, perfectly dark, quiet, and breezy/cool - as well as free, of course. It appears to be used as a dumping ground and has broken bottles all over the place, but we arrived late and planned to leave early so didn't care. However, you may not want to stay here - just as we were getting ready to go to bed, 4 patrolling policemen drove up and told us it wasn't safe to camp there due to the possibility of robbery. They were quite insistent and showed us the way to the nearest gas station, where we paid Q20 to park and use the bathrooms/showers. A horrible night's sleep, super bright, hot, and incredibly loud. After talking with the gas station attendants, we feel that perhaps the policemen were being overly cautious (just doing their jobs, they were nice) - the attendants say that the area is generally safe and it would be unusual for someone to try and rob you. So basically, use your own discretion - if you feel like it's safe enough, it's a great spot for a good night's sleep, but keep your lights low if you want to avoid attracting the attention of the police.
