Description

Going down:
Leaving Lesotho:
The Lesotho Post is on the Top of the Sani Pass. Stamped Passports, that's it (as we didn't need a TIP or Carnet as we entered). Took 30 Seconds. The Pass consists of about 20 km Gravel Road, everything else is paved. 4WD is compulsory according to signs. When wet definitely 4WD only or not possible at all.

Entering South Africa:
Also only stamped Passports. Our TIP was not even looked at. Took 3 Minutes.

Going up:
Stamp passports at SA building. No TIP, carnet or anything else required.

Drive up Sani pass to Lesotho post. Park before the gate or get yelled at. Stamp passports and pay road toll. Drive through gate. No carnet or TIP required here either.

Still (again?) open and easy, 6am - 6pm, Covid Test available till 4pm (250R on SA side).

Note that there is no immigration on the SA side, they stamp you out or back in but have no way of giving you a new visa. If your Visa expired while in Lesotho they can give you 7 days for transit.

We just drove up the pass
stamped out in SA but not stamped the carnet.
On the top we turnd around so there was no Covid test required. With covid test would be no problem to entere Lesotho I assume.

Report Check-In

Drove the Sani Pass today with a 4x2 FWD Toyota RAV4. No questions asked at the border. Depending on weather conditions, the pass is fully doable with any car with decent ground clearance. Prior off-road experience in order to do it in a 4x2 is highly advisable to know which paths which are doable. Please also drop the tire pressure to make the climb easier, avoiding spinning and damaging the trail.

Report Check-In

We climbed the Sani pass in our 9t m, 7.5m big rig and it was rough but passable. Low range, 4x4, and diff lock required for large trucks, on a couple of hairpin bends we needed to reverse to get round. Rough gravel, loose stones, and large rocks but never too narrow or tilted. Only bother is the minibuses.

Border post at the top is no hassle, 80 rand fee for large trucks (2 axles).

Report Check-In

SA-Lesotho:
NO VISA required (polish passport), no carnet. You just say at Lesotho side how many days you want to stay and pay 40 rands for road tax.

Report Check-In

We did it without low gear and without 4x4 by heavy Nissan Patrol (3.1t) but ofcourse better is switch it on.

Pass and road is very very nice!
Border to Lesoto without a visa (EU citizen)

Report Check-In

We filled drinking water just before the border side South Africa. It is more difficult to fill it in Lesotho

Report Check-In

By far the easiest and fastest border crossing during out Africa tour...both sides took only 30 seconds. Just stamped the passports and that's it.

Report Check-In

Just an information for people with carnet.
We came from Lesotho and get our carnet stamped out in Lesotho and in ZA stamped in by the police.
Border close at 4pm.

Report Check-In

We took the Sani pass with our motorcycles, this road is a must do for motorcycles :) Border crossing leaving SA, just stamp your passport out, entering Lesotho he will ask you how long you want to stay and give you that many days on your stamp to stay. Also you need to pay road tax of 30 rand per motorcycle or car.
