Description

Late 2018 update: MUST have letter of introduction from your home embassy, they will not issue a tourist visa without it.
Also ONLY tourist visa possible is one month single entry, no exceptions.
$40 USD, visa issued next day no problem.

You can get a visa for Ethiopia here but be persistent and polite. You will need the usual documents; passport, 1 copy of passport, 1 passport photo. In addition you need to complete an Application Form and be sure to have the contact name, phone number, email and address of a place in Ethiopia. But before you get the Application Form you need a letter from your embassy requesting Ethiopia to give you a visa. The words are very important, please see attached photo. Without this letter you will not get the visa. Please note British Embassy refuses to provide the letter. Australian Embassy charges 5510 Shillings to provide the letter. Also the payment for the Ethiopia Visa is to be made at a Commercial Bank of Africa office (they accept various currencies at the bank). US$40 is single entry 30 day visa. $60 is single entry 3 month. $70 is multi entry 3 month. $80 is 6 month visa. We put a star on the map for the closest Bank.

We have dual nationality (British/Australia), but we are travelling with our British passports and we know from experience that it is very hard to change between passports, immigration often want to see the stamp out from the previous country before stamping us in, we've had arguments with official many times about this.

As far as the prices go, I think they were the same for all nationalities. Unlike the Sudan which had a special price for American's which was 3 times as much.

IMPORTANT!

Evisa is now accepted at Moyale border post, despite the official website.

Don't waste your time trying to get an Ethiopian visa here. After getting all of our papers in order and visiting Ethiopian Embassies in 5 countries we finally were informed that the Evisa is now accepted at the Moyale border.

We applied online and were sorted within a couple of minutes, all went smoothly at the border, they contact Addis to verify the Visa so may take a couple minutes.

It is not possible to get an Ethiopian visa here even if you have a letter from your embassy. for French people it is also not possible to get it at Paris. However if you apply for an e-visa you can cross the border at Moyale by land. We did it on 27/09/19 with e-visa.

We are German travellers with a truck. Our embassy don't help with a Letter of Introduction! No explanation! So we tried it without the Letter - and finally we got our visa! Be always friendly, patient and stubborn. Try to pass the Lady at the first counter, look for someone else. Explain your situation, ask for the possibility to speak to the ambassador or his representative (very kind guy), and if you are lucky you get the visa immediately. You can pay now at the embassy! Finally tooks four hours...

Austrian guy travelling north by car. Got my letter of introduction at the Austrian embassy one hour after showing up (5000KeS). It‘s also hanging at Jungle Junction but with name, date etc. Next day I took Taxify Go from Jungle Junction to the embassy for 470!KeS. Was at the embassy at about 10. Went straight inside the consular section. Security scans you and you have to leave your phone turned off behind. Inside go to the reception with:

letter of your embassy
passport

The guy will bring the papers to the ambassador while you wait inside.
After he comes back with your papers, there will be some notes on the letter. Now you‘ll get the application form. Fill it and be sure to have a phone number, name and address of the hotel, email and also any name of the „manager“. On the back side write the countries in Africa you‘ve been to, which one after Ethiopia and where to in Ethiopia (Bale,Omo...).

After that you have to go to the woman with the cross on hear forehead. Give her

the filled form
the letter of your embassy
the passport
copy of passport
one passphoto
maybe booking (I did)

If it‘s fine, you‘ll get the bank details and the price for your visa in $ (1 month 40, 3 months 60...). Go to the next commercial bank of Africa (about 1,5km walking distance) and ask the security how to do it. You can pay in Kes, USD, EUR. After 2pm I went back to the embassy with the receipt and were able to pick up my passport within the visa.

So it‘s a one day procedure and no problem if you got anything as stated...

Two of us (one Australian and one British citizen) managed to obtain Ethiopian visas in 2 days without too much fuss. As described by 'the pack track' a letter of introduction is required, the Australian embassy will provide such a letter (for a price), however the British embassy will only provide a letter saying that they do not provide letters of introduction (apparently a rule passed down from head office in london). We took both the Australian letter and British (non) letter to the Ethiopian consulate and were told by the receptionist that the British letter was not acceptable. We ignored him and just took both letters around to the other side of the embassy and had them viewed and accepted by the ambassador after which both visas were approved. So it appears uk citizens can obtain a visa in nairobi, after all.

NOTE: When receiving our letters from both the Australian and British embassies the very kind consular officers told us that about a month back a group of 4 people came in and were extremely rude, demanding to see head consular officials so that the wording of the letter was just right. Just a polite suggestion that in future when people go through this process they remain calm and friendly. It could easily be the case that one overlanding group might cause such letters to stop being provided and ruin things for everybody that follows.
