Description

Nice spot with a big parking area next to the laguna. We arrived around 6 pm it's a restaurant, small boat rental and family spot where people can barbeque and hang out around the lake. we asked a woman who was closing the restaurant if it was possible to stay here. No problem she said but she was just closing the baños so we asked her if she could open them for the night if I paid her some money. I gave her 50 pesos and she agreed. Bathroom with 3 normal flush toilets. The area around the lake looks beautiful and we are expecting a really nice quiet night :-) There are also some restaurants close to it.

When arriving at the lake, continue to your left on the paved road.

We arrived just before sunset and they were just closing the place. Asked if we can camp, said no problem. It's free. Not sure if this is public property.

Worth mentioning that this is not a fenced or guarded property. I think that the owners or employees sleep here as there was a car parked in front of the restaurant the entire night. The restaurant was closed when we arrived. The restaurant did not seem to be open early in the morning. We wanted to give the MX $100 the next day, but we did not manage to do this. So it is best to give a "propina" as you arrive.

Some locals were listening to nice Mexican music and chilling near the lake. They left around 10:30 PM. Nobody bothered us.

Horses roamed during the night and annoyed the two dogs that are around here. So there was a bit of commotion during the night. There are some roosters around, so it wasn't the most quiet night.

The morning is very tranquil.

There are not many options around here but the nearby town looks clean and safe. It also has a few hotels in case you need a backup.

Café by the swings and slide
The cafe manager was great. We gave them $100 pesos to be polite and ate in the cafe.
Put the tent up on the grass, but he they suggested under the shelter in case it rained, really lovely people 😊😊
Fantastic little spot!

Just an FYI: One comment mentiones Tolantongo on this route. We couldn’t find any signs for it on the MEX105, took a turn to some village and the road quickly became rough and for us impassable (21ft motorhome). If you have a bigger rig I would take the MEX85 to Ixmiquilpan and follow the signs there.

We spent a weekend here. Lovely place. Parked at the back of the restaurant. The lady let us get water to fill our 30l tanks. We also asked her to plug our electricity extension in her restaurant and she agreed. She wanted to charge us 200 for 2 days but we negotiated to 150 mexican pesos. Very quiet and safe place. Lovely spot to relax and walk around. There is a waterfall somewhere nearby! We couldn’t walk to there as it wa raining and it was impossible to walk, but if you go in dry season check it out!

Stopped at 9pm to rest for the night on our drive to Tolantongo. Arrived and it was very peaceful with no one else around. We parked our van on a flat grassy area beside the lake, near some horses. Due to arriving at night we didn't have access to bathrooms. Still a great night's sleep and no rubbish anywhere! Please help to keep this space clean.

Nice place, horses, cows around, lake. Many little mosquitos that can get thru tent net and even hard to see when they bite.
Toilet in a camping area closed permanently.
But for the price (free) everything is fine :)
