Description

Even though the access to Montana Santa Barbara is free, it is highly recommended to take a guide (the paths are not signalized).
The spot indicated is Leonel Chavez's house, the only guide on this side of the mountain, and who is really good.
With him you can arrange tours for going to the top of the mountain, birdwatching, etc.
His coordinates are :
(504) 3206 7319
[email protected]

If you're staying at Cortijo del Lago, his son works there and can help you arranging the meeting.
We did a birdwatching tour, and we managed to see quetzals (the price was 250L per person).

To go there, you can either climb with your car (4x4 recommended, we didn't manage to climb all the way in rainy season with our 2WD Chevy van), or park in the adjacent city of Las Vegas at the main park, and from there take a collectivo up to El Cedral, asking for Leonel (he's well-known). Price is 20L per person per way

Latest Check-Ins

Leonel offers hikes to the summit (usually guided by one of his sons; 4 hours up and 3 down) and birdwatching hikes, up to 5 hours long or 2.5 hours. I opted for the shorter birdwatching tour and we were gone almost 5 hours anyway - he was determined to find me some quetzals and eventually did - albeit way up high on the trees and the mist! He says they're around pretty well all year. We gained some 600m in altitude and got pretty wet and muddy; dress appropriately and with decent footwear. This really is his baby - he was born and raised there, made the paths (check out the work involved just in the tyre steps!), named them, guides them, planted some of the vegetation, and knows a tonne about the flora and fauna on the mountain. Well worth the cash (starting from 350pp for the shortest excursion).

Don't fear the road up - the staff at D&D were dubious about me getting up there in my RWD automatic Astro, but it was nothing like as steep as some roads I've managed, and is paved where necessary.

It is a stunning area. In order to get to the top of the mountain I certainly recommend to take a guide. I tried to find the path, but at one point there are too many turns + no GPS signal....

Report Check-In

could not do the hike because we could not reach the guide by phone and when we decided to drive to his house we had to turn over because our van was not able to climb the steep roads. the advice from the previous spot is a good one. just stop at the village of Las Vegas and take a collectivo to go to El Cedral
