Description

You can get a visa on arrival and insurance here. For 30 days we paid $20 for the insurance, this was payable in USD. Most people can get a visa on arrival for 50$. (paid 650 metrical in 2023 with European passport).
If you ask they will let you drive to the nearest ATM which is 4km away. Otherwise you will have to deal with the money changers.

If you travel on public transport and want to go to south mozambique, this is a good alternative to going via tete.
If you start early, you can take chapas to Nicodala or quelimane. From there a bus starts to maputo at 5 am.

Going from Malawi to mozambique we had not applied for a visa (German Citizenship). In contrast to other reviews, we had no problems receiving a visa. All we needed to show was a booking reservation for a hotel (printed).
Streets are in decent condition on both sides

Moz - Mal: we left Mozambique here and a police officer told us (coming from the blue tiny building) that we had to pay 10USD road tax. Very strange as we already paid this amount when we entered Moz in Pafuri. This was after we already got our exit stamps from the migration offices. We think it is a corrupt officer. So when you are leaving Moz drive straight out when you got your stamps, to avoid this officer.

ALREADY 3 months that THEY ARE NOT MAKING THE VISA ON ARRIVAL, MAKE THE E-VISA, at least, ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE in www.evisa.gov.mz

Spent 8,5 hrs at this border before we were let through into Mozambique from Malawi.

Exit Malawi was easy - two windows to stamp out passport and carnet. The gate ‘staff’ weren’t wearing uniforms and 3 different men wanted to see different pieces of papers before a 4th opened the gate. I think they were just having fun - but they were friendly enough.

Mozambique also friendly staff and a quiet border, no harassment. But hurricane destroyed office equipment. So they are limited in facilities. There are no lights, no flushing toilets and most importantly; not all visa types can be issued. They do not have the sticker printing machine. (Or a printer in general for that matter). They wanted to send us back to Lilongwe embassy to get the right visa sticker. After long discussions and pointing out that we were entering as NL tourist (so visa exempt as long as you register online 48hrs before and print the document which we did) they let us in. Unclear if they really didn’t know how to deal with our situation or whether they were looking for a payday. In any case. For this border, don’t register for border visa but for tourist visa, don’t get a letter of invitation, but instead make a hotel reservation. Keep the situation simple as possible then it should be fine.

650 mtz for registration fee (get receipt)
10 USD road tax (one way transit) or USD 20 for month. Insurance 20 USD.

Money exchange is against very poor rates - but everywhere, with everyone, at border and in town. To be honest no one is keen on Malawi currency at the moment.

From Malawi to Moz:

We applied online for the Moz border visa, despite the fact that Switzerland among other countries are now exempt from the visa process. We showed up at the border with the printed visa pre-approval and booking confirmation. The immigration officer was a bit picky about our travel itinerary. However, he was ok with it. The process took a bit long but we paid only the 650 MT for the waiver fee pp as per the new rule. 20 USD for the car insurance, 20 USD T.I.P. In the end we had to go with the immigration officer to Milange to pick up the receipt as cyclone Fred wiped away the office infrastructure. No discussions, friendly and helpful officers. 1h 45min on Moz side, 15 min on Malawi side, both easy crossings.

Entering Moz from Muloza Border

Print out booking (can be anywhere and any date, doesn’t have to have all the guest names, just main person)
Buy insurance online (we bought Hollard). Print insurace
Covid cert
Yellow fever cert (ONLY if you been to yellow fever countries recently). Health officer gave us bullshit and did not want to accept our cert because it didnt have a “stamp”. Anyway you DO NOT NEED yellow fever IF you came from Malawi as there is no yellow fever there

Visa 50 USD pp
TIP for car 750 MT
20 USD road tax (get receipt)

There are people loitering around to exchange out your MKW to MT. They gave us 45 mt per 1000 mkw
Not crowded on Sunday

Exiting Mozambique: about 45min, had to pay MT98.88 for something to do with the car. Relatively easy but not friendly.
Entering Malawi: Visa for 7 day transit AND 30 day visa are both $US50. They were really nice and made it easy. Took us into the office to sit while they processed the visa.
Waited to get the carnet stamped but again really easy process they all knew what to do and didn’t muck us around. Took about 2 hours for whole border crossing.
Car insurance is just down the road about 500m on the left in a blue container. It is behind the shops so you can’t see it until you go past it. There was lots of trucks parked up on the side of the road where it was.

For clarity, if you are traveling from Moz to Malawi you must buy Visa which for most passports is $50 for 7 days or less or $75 for 30 days. Only US cash or Malawi Kwachas. No ATM at border but there are moneychangers. Be sure to buy Malawi insurance at border - they didn't ask us and we got fined on the roadside about 20klms up the road. you need the sticker in the window so you'll get waved through at all the stops.

Very calm border. Crossing on Saturday. Open apparently from 6 to 6.

Visa and Insurance all payable with USD. 50$ Visa and 20$ Insurance for regular station wagon.

We travel with Carnet.

Beware, we had two one dollar bill which were printed in 2009. They were not accepted by the officers. Luckily we had two more.

There are money changer at the border, but they give you crappy rates. Used the ones in town to change our remaining Kwachas to Metical.

In total the border crossing took us 1h.

Crossing Malawi to Mozambique, very easy although a little slow.

$50pp 1 month visa (UK and NZ)
TIP was free
Car insurance was 1700 metical or $20usd which doesn't match up.... (they don't accept yellow card/comesa)

Good experience at the border. Not busy. Nice officials. Immigration charged $35 for a single entry 30-day visa, payable only in local currency: 2135 MZN. (We are US citizens). Insurance for 30-days was also only payable in Malawi kwacha or in local currency: 1700 MZN. We used money changers. Customs stamped our Carnet, even though Mozambique is not listed on the carnet as a country which accepts them. Before leaving the border, we were approached by a nice guy in a white lab coat and were required to show him our Yellow Fever certificates. He also took our temperature.
