Description

This is free camping in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the Colorado River just as it becomes Lake Mead for a while. There are at least 3 different camping zones on this side of Lake Mead. Our site is in Willow Tree and it is on the North end of the lake. We have a spot right on the water with a little cove. No one else here. Great stars, very dark and quite. No facilities. Pack it in, Pack it out. Fire rings, but bring your own wood. Mosquitoes are the worst I have seen. We came in at dusk and drove through clouds of them. We got lucky at camp there was a nice breeze keeping them reasonable and same in the morning. Beware if there is no wind. Signs coming in say 4x4 required for the roads. We are here during the dry season and never used our 4x4, but I can see how if it rains you may need it. Due to the signs I don't know what a ranger would do if you came out in 2wd. A swimming dogs paradise. We had no cell service.

Good points: Beautiful and very peaceful place. The sunsets are heavenly and the Colorado River is azure and clear. There are TV sets (20 for us) Perfect place for Kayaking. Lots of wood to make a campfire. well-appointed places.
Weak points: Very weak cellular network, lots of waste from other campers in some places, access is very difficult and roads very bumpy and poorly maintained. Very windy place. We do not recommend for large buses or big campers. Risk of engine overheating in the mountains.

20 mile bumpy, dirt road to filthy, garbage filled sites. So sad how much trash is everywhere...Other than that, it was fine. We drove our 25 ft travel trailer on this and it took 1.5 hours from the time we got off the freeway onto the dirt road until camp. I would go to Airport Cove just down the road a little more. When I walked around, that area was much cleaner. Lots of wildlife! We found oposum tracks (or racoon?), saw donekys, great blue heron, and a few mice thought they'd join our caravan and made themselves at home in our trailer.

Great access to the water, which is sparkling, crystal clear, and cool. Vegetation provides shelter from wind. There’s another campsite close by, so we could hear them but it wasn’t bad at all. It gets pretty hot and the sun is unrelenting, so if you go this time of year, bring a good canopy. No 4wd needed to get here, just have to watch out for rocks and bumps on the way. And the Cottonwood Rd to come through the mountains is a washboard road that gets smoothed out every now and then, but it doesn’t help a ton. Oh and this site in particular, it has three gigantic trash bags FULL of alcohol bottles and cigarette packs, the bags split open probably from animals. There was some kind of critter rooting around in them after we went to bed. I could only fit one of them in my car when I left, so there’s still more trash left behind. If you go here, please take a bag (but be warned - there’s ants in them.)

Nice quiet campsite. We lucked out and had the whole place to ourselves for the 3 days we we're there. There was some shelter from the wind each afternoon. We made it here without 4wd. The dirt roads pretty smooth except for the last 5-10 miles was pretty bumpy.
