Description

After hiking the Rainbow Mountain, we went down to the town of Pitumarca and found this place to park. We slept with another van and it was a very quiet evening. The police have gone a few times, but the town is very quiet.

Place to camp in a village. It‘s not very pretty as it is located IN the village. There are some grass spots where you can park or pop your tent. There is the local bus terminal, too, which is surrounded by a fence. We asked the police (they were walking around) if we can camp there and they even offered us to drive our car in fenced area and pop our tents there. A lot of people in the morning and a lot of mini busses in the fenced area. If you would like to sleep longer you might want to stay outside. Nice people everywhere.

Be aware, tour buses pull up at 630am with music blaring and lots of talking...the go into the house in the corner for an hour doing something...not sure what. After they go, the town announcements come on as well. If you want to do the hike around 11, we had no traffic coming down towards us and in the afternoon, had the lookout to ourselves. Enjoy!

stayed here two nights with no real issues (someone did appear to steal our dogs water jug...not sure why). it was not too cold in June and there's a few spots with bathrooms nearby. smells a bit like horse poop.

I highly recommend sleeping here and then driving up to rainbow mtn around 8:30 (arriving at 10). if the weather is good you basically miss all the crowds and have the peak to yourself around 1:00. you do pass a lit if hikers on their way down for about 30 min but otherwise you quite alone. there's no reason to hike up at 6:00 am in the cold.

the road is also totally fine. it's relatively wide and quite smooth except for a few hairpins.
