In its day, Dawson NM was a booming mining town. Today, there's not much here besides a lonely cemetery, and some informational signs about the place.
It's atmospheric, with just the wind and the grasshoppers. I boondocked just outside the cemetery gates. A couple of other people came by to look at the place in the afternoon, but I had it all to myself at night. When I left the next day, I passed a herd of about 30 elk along the road.
No facilities, no cell service. I'm sure there are places you could put a tent, but it's a bit gravelly.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
There is a no overnight camping/parking sign, violators will be prosecuted. This is essentially private property but the land owner allows access to the cemetery for obvious reasons. I'd strongly advise against overnight parking here although it's a beautiful canyon and the cemetery is very interesting if you want to visit. Trust me, they know you are there!
Report Check-Inlocals told me that they bulldozed the town years ago but left the cemetary. peaceful and quiet. only a couple of others stopped by throughout the day. I would not recommend this spot to pet owners with long hair; there are many tiny burrs that will stick to their fur and get tangled and matted. removing the burrs are a major pain. Other than that, there is a lot of history behind these gates.
Report Check-InRode my motorcycle to this spot to check it out, but was boondocking at nearby Springer Lake.
The dirt road to the cemetery was long but in fairly good condition with a only a few touchy areas.
I don’t think I would want to camp here when two legit camping spots next to lakes are close by.
It is an interesting historical site to check out if you are in the area and interested in it’s history.
