The arrival at CONAF is a long climb with a lot of hairpin turns on ripio but is easy even without 4x4! We had 0 problems with our Peugeot Boxer. At the CONAF center, 2 guards explained the different hikes to us in detail, great park!

i dont think you can get past the first few steep parts without 4x4. afterwards it's an easy road.

Report Check-In

Camped aside the road, next to the bridge across the small river. The Refugio area was very busy (it is high season), but there are a few spots with moderate solitude nearby.

It is a very nice place to camp. The road from here to the top Refugio and hiking trail is another 5km, and fairly steep with a few deep ruts early on. However with high clearance it is possible to do without 4x4 if it is dry.

The hikes are great. And the river and forest are very peaceful.

Report Check-In

Camped next to the deck and grill platform next to the refugio. No one around to collect fees or get info about the hikes on Dec 10. 2017. Very peaceful spot. The dirt road up to this point was steep but in good condition. Beautiful drive with great views of Lake Riñihue and Volcanoes Choshuenco and Mocho.

From this point on you can drive further up the maintain on a 4x4 road all the way to the trailhead to the glacier. We were only able to drive 1.6 km due to road being blocked by snow. Rough road. 4x4 and high clearance recommended.
