Description

Update as of October 2018: The road is open at all times no issues at all. just a short stretch of gravel.

For updated information on this please see the Facebook group "Overlanding the Americas". If you are travelling to / from the Carretera Austral via Futelefu there is now a temporjary road in place. If you are travelling north or south on the Carretera Austral there is a 7 hour ferry between Chaiten and Balmaceda; photos of the ferry timetables are on the Facebook group and below.

From Ruth Burgess - catastrophic mudslide which occurred in villa Santa Lucia in Chile a few weeks ago. It has blocked around 2km of the Carretera Austral which is a major route for cyclists and hitchhikers. It is very difficult to get accurate information from official channels about when the road will be reopened (Google suggests not till March) & so people are relying on word of mouth info but having to make pretty huge diversions (100s of kms by the sound of it)& completely altering the trips they have planned.

Not knowing about the Katastrophe we went north from futaleufu. there is No sign or warning about the closure untill you are at Santa Lucia. the closure is, where the mudd Starts. It still looks, as If that happend just days ago 😢😢. Military and Red Cross are on sight. apparently there is a small ferry vor people across the Lake nearby. also Busses seem to operate. Not sure If this is meant for tourists though... Looks terrible!

Report Check-In

Bypass to Futaleufu its open.
Villa Santa Licia is abondent and no facilities available. Just the army there to clean up..

Report Check-In

Road closed due to an avalanche. Latest news were: closure until March/April 2018.

There is a ferry from Chaiten to Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda but it is very full. Book tickets in advance in a Transporte Austral Office (we booked in Puerto Montt). Two ferries a day (7am and 11pm). They take about 7 hours. Road to Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda is duable with 2wd. But plan a lot of time for the road, because the small ferry on the road to La Junta may need 2,5 hours for all the cars from the big ferry.

UPDATE: there is a bypass so if you are traveling from south to north and you want to reach futaleufu, it is definitely possible. The bypass is right in front of villa santa lucia and takes you on the road to futaleufu.

Santiago: A mudslide on Saturday tore through a small village in southern Chile near a popular national park, leaving five people dead and at least 15 missing after a night of torrential downpours, authorities said.

A video taken from a helicopter by Chilean police showed a vast swath of the remote town of Villa Santa Lucia, near Chaiten in coastal Patagonia, buried beneath the mud as the landslide plowed its way down a flooded river valley.
