Something not right?

Description

We entered the park travelling North on Kelbaker Rd. Directly East of the Sweeney Granite Mnts Desert Research Centre (which appears on Google Maps) turn right on a dirt road near the power lines. The road has no name. Eventually, the road opens up to a small, fenced in camping area with a fire ring, right under a small mountain range! The road goes off in many directions, so lots of space to explore. A great spot for hiking, or just hanging out. We drove in on a 2WD GMC Savanna camper van with decent clearance, but a car could easily make this trek, just go slow. Bring water, firewood and stuff for s'mores and enjoy your private vacay in Mojave.

Unmarked entrance off the main road. We made it back to a spot further than the coordinates here in a 21ft Promaster Camper van. A couple difficult spots, but didn't get stuck.
Fairly secluded on a Sturday night, 3 other campers around but spread out quite nicely.

great campsite, road was dry and accessible with my 2x2 sprinter. if it rains it could be slick moving. it does indeed feel secluded and beautiful.

Very lovely. easy drive from the paved road. space for multiple rigs and some cell service.

Only one campsite is now accessible via this road, the one marked at this pin. Spurs beyond this pin have been blocked by NP fiberglass barriers. The first pics in this post seem to be incorrect. As stated below, the boulder area is not accessible by vehicle and the pics show juniper which do not exist here. Another location?

We have a pickup and a 30' trailer. Dirt road in was wide enough to prevent limb scratches. Sandy surface when dry was adequate in 2WD. Fenced camping area at coordinates had plenty of room for multiple large vehicles. Level. Silent, peaceful night. I-40 headlights visible many miles to the east. Interesting wildlife - desert kangaroo rats (active at night), lizards almost everywhere, a snake that casually popped out of a hole next to us (nonvenomous), and something small that loped by our window after dark. Boulders at the base of the mtn across the wash made for great exploring.

Note: large vehicles need to go back out the way you came in from this point. Made the mistake of relying on satellite photos and 2022 post and initially explored further down the road and had to clear the road as we went, as it had overgrown substantially. No turnarounds for a rig our size.

We came to camp by the boulders shown in the pictures to escape the wind as of late but couldn't find them. There are boulder areas but none of them matched the pictures nor had a way to drive up to them on trail.

We continued past the fenced site marked here as someone was already camping. A bit further down the road is a large clearing on the right with a fire ring. Would make a great group camp spot. Not all of the area is level but several rigs could find a spot.

It was quiet and we enjoyed exploring the area and it's rock formations with so many little Joshua Trees. Great space for the dogs to run, but keep in mind there are tiny mice that seem to come out after dark.

Almost no service on tmobile, 3 to 4 bars LTE with Verizon. No issues with road in our 170 Sprinter.

Wonderful secluded camping spot. Level ground and lots of space.

Report Check-In

There are a number of pull outs along this two track.

Report Check-In

Many camping spots all along the dirt road. The first pullout is pretty large and can hold a handful of cars and tents and easy to get to. Futher down the road looks sandy in some spots. Full verizon coverage

One of our favorite places in the Mohave. Nice and open and secluded. We had the place to ourselves for most of our 5 days here. We made it in fine with our 2wd van.
