Russia
Single ferry service to Olkhon island.
Free.
Very busy. Long lanes. Be prepared for hours of queue in July/August.
Officially the Ferry service closes at 9PM but we crossed at 1AM with the very last ferry or the day.
Opening dates depend on the weather.
There are two small ferries that go back and forth to the island. In winter only one ship.
Additional information for winter: there is some time when there is too much ice for the ferry and not enough for the iceroad. That weeks, they use Hoovercrafts, but those are only for passengers, not for vehicles. So if you want to go in winter, ask before going.
Motorcycles seem to be able to cut the line and find whatever spot is available on the ferry.
When we arrived the line was circa 1.5km-long, which usually takes a 10h+ wait average.
Russian families sleep in their car overnight to stay in line.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Arrived Tueasday early in the morning. FYI, There are 2 queue. Left one is for local people who live on Olkhon Island who have priority of course. Right lane is for turists
Ferry is still free for light vehicles.
No waiting time at all. Everything ok. We experienced this in both directions.
Report Check-InHave waited 2 hours for a ferry to the island on a Saturday afternoon. The “queuing” system is typical of this country, if you have enough cash the police man and ferry workers let you on before anyone else. After a lack lustre visit to the island we decided to leave on the Sunday and have been waiting for 8 hours... again being screwed by people paying bribes.
Report Check-InWe arrived at 11pm, there were only 2 cars ahead of us. In less than 5mn we we were on the ferry. On the way back there were about 6 cars ahead of us, but we could still board within 10mm. I guess we've been lucky considering this is July.
Report Check-InSaturday evening, end of june, no waiting line, ferry left around 21.15 with 4 cars. The road alone from irkutsk to the ferry is worth the trip!
