Unlike what you might find on the internet there IS a path to go straight from Sucre to Torotoro ! It's unpaved but in a fairly good state considering how remote it is. I went from Sucre to Poroma on my bicycle so here is what i've seen so far :
- it's a freaking rollercoaster ! You'll probably need 4WD, and if on a bike like me make sure you know what you are getting into, to Torotoro it's 180km with 7000m D+. You'll be going up and down all the time.
average speed in 4wd : 20 to 25 km/h
- it's truely magnificent ! some parts are just at the edge of a cliff, the views are just mindblowing but if you suffer from vertigo you might want to skip it.
- i was there in march si still some water in the streams to cook with. anyway you can buy water and food in San Juan de Orcas and Poroma.
- there is now a bridge over Rio San Pedro, making it easier to cross though be careful in rainy season, i couldn't make it to Torotoro partly because the path from Poroma to the bridge was in a dreadful state. road is closed between viru Viru and the bridge untill July 2018.
- check your brakes before going, the downhill parts are sometimes very steep and winding.
-very little traffic along the way, but the path is narrow in some places so take it slowly.
- there are buses leaving to Sucre from Poroma every morning i you happen to get stuck there with your bike like i did.
- when in doubt, always go for the most well-marked path (or ask the locals)

Latest Check-Ins

Torotoro to Sucre: Not possible to go this route. The road from Torotoro was quite nice but the bridge over the San Pedro river ended in rubble. No chance of getting through with any vehcile. No signs or warnings ahead of time. No workers around... looks like it will be a long time before it's open.

Report Check-In

The road is currently closed between Viru Viru and the bridge over Rio San Pedro.
They said it will be open in July 2018.
We passed by this road from Sucre to (almost) Viru Viru and conditions are good untill Poroma. Then, a 4WD is needed. Don't do it if its raining.
Landscapes are amazing and there are a lot of little villages to see. Enjoy !
