During my research, all I could find about this road was that it was horrifying, with water trenches as deep as an adult human being.

Behold, the road is hardpack gravel, better than some gravel roads in Namibia. It was dry when I passed from Angola towards Luozi, but should not pose any problems in the wet also. There were some sections (maybe less than 5%) on which the water took away the gravel and formed 15 centimeters ditches. On my motorcycle I even managed 90 km/h on the better sections.

A local later told me that the road was repaired six months ago, after a governor was elected from the region. He went to Luozi and all the people started whining that they wanted a new road, which was done.

All in all, deflate your tires for off-road and enjoy one of the best gravel roads ever.

Latest Check-Ins

The first 45km or so to the Lwozi boat is very good road, after that it gets worse (with a particularly bad bit in the middle). It’s definitely much better than the road beyond this but it does need maintenance. We took around 3.5 hours for the 95km, taking it fairly chilled because our car had a suspension issue.

Report Check-In

Still very good dirt road, but no maintenance on ditches or damaged sections (approx 40km before Luozi).
Maybe we were lucky, but only one police check-point, asking for "something" ... then the happy policeman was gifted with a charming smile ;)

I forgot to add that I have seen two or three Essance/GPL stations on the way to the ferry.

Also, have been stopped by four or five checkpoints and had to give away a bottle of water at one (pens were tucked away) and a pen at another.
