Guatemala
I have a 5 speed automatic diesel and my transmission overheated going up and brakes faded twice and had to use emergency stopping procedure coming down. This road has the steepest grade of any road I've traveled in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. If you have a super low manual gear box and have a heavy load, then give it a try but there is no place to turn around on the entire road until you get to the top. If you can't make it, you'll be backing down the whole way. I have a heavy load in my RV and diesel powered but maybe you have more power and better brakes than me. Buenos Suerte.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Agree you need a 4x4 with at most a pop up camper for this route. The local weekend traffic who access this way all have powerful 4x4s. We have a truck camper and accessed via the other parking lot marked. A classic yellow big school bus was in the car park too when we arrived so it’s doable in a bigger rig.
Report Check-Inyou have two option to ascend ipala:
1. from the east. is only for 4wd but brings you all the way to the top.
2. from the west. but is a very steep road. walking the road to the start op the walking path is 45min to an hour. the walking path takes one hour. you can do this by horse if you want. takes also one hour.
we didnt risk the steep road. we did half the road by car. parked where the road turns from paved to concrete, because thats the very steep part. from there its 20 min walking up to start of walking path.
hitchhiking is very common here on both roads. we didnt even put or thumbs up. a local just stopt and gave us a free ride up.
very friendly and welcoming people living on the vulcano.
nice view and lake on top. can recommend!!!
