For free forest camping, take the forest road turn off on the East side of the river and head north (the forest road on the West side of the river will take you to the Lower Piedra campground and requires a fee).
There are at least three camp sites with fire rings along the Piedra River before the road continues North. This is a great spot for a night or two with access to the river. The only downside was the closeness to the road and the dust from passing vehicles. Folks were flying by for Memorial Day Weekend festivities when we were here.
After this point, the road increases in elevation for quite awhile with no or limited access to the river below until you reach Sheep Creek trailhead where you can hike down to the river, across, and up to some hot springs. We did not hike this trail or continue past Sheep Creek to determine river accessibility.

Easy to access, fairly flat. Right along road so a bit exposed and occasional bit of noise and dust.
Water was high and fast so no water play/access from this side of the river. Other bank has 2 swimming holes.
No cell service whatsoever.
Report Check-InGreat Florida riverside campspot. Still great spot very level next to river about 15 ft. Fire spots w/ rocks.
So much water flow due to record snowmelt! 4 spots on this road b4 the wilderness gate. Keep it clean!
The spots are all right next to the river. It was very beautiful and quiet.
Report Check-InGreat spot! I saw 5-6 possible spots though some small. My spot was great and had access to river. Road is in good shape although while i was there they dropped dirt along it which helped for driving but created a lot of dust as others mentioned. No cel service at all. Easy access road, any vehicle easily.
Report Check-InSuch a great spot...right on the River!! Don’t miss this if you are in the area
Report Check-Innice spots , but campground was nicer. nobody was their in June. also on the other side of the river, just past this spot there is a local swimming hole. people floating. warm water and bright blue. very nice
Report Check-InNice flat spots with fire rings and solid privacy from neighbors along the river! We arrived around 6pm on a Tuesday in early May and were lucky to get a spot...numerous vehicles drove past us later on and ended up turning around to leave. Right off of 160, but still feels remote. The river sounds and starry sky were spectacular. Great spot in the way to or from Durango area.
Report Check-InEasy to find and lots of potential spots. Very quiet with a nice river. Pretty location. Only one other person camped out. Dirt road is well maintained. Great spot!
Report Check-InGreat stop for one night. It was super windy when we stayed. Fair amount of traffic on road, but river noise served to drown it out.
Report Check-InGood place for the night. Right next to the river. There are 3 or 4 capsites for a rig, max 2. There are firepits but fires are currently not allowed. The stream was very strong and the river was very cold, impossible to swim. It was nice though the night, the river sounds acted like white noise. There was no trash, let's keep it that way.
Report Check-InPacked dirt road, beyond the Outfitters on the left and over one cattle guard. Great riverside parking. Free.
Report Check-InNice flat spot by the river campers may have difficulty getting into this spot. Had no issues in our converted van.
