Description

Update April 2022: the sandy patch is now completely overgrown with high grass & Devil's thorn. The big tree is mostly gone. Maybe doable in winter but not great in summer. Still good views though and very private, which is great.

By coordinates this should be Xade Campsite. A few km from the gate and airport. Its a spot with a nice view over 100m far.

The campsite itself is nothing but a sandy spot under a big tree with a fire pit. Nothing else.

Coming from the south the road is very sandy for the last 30 to 40 km before the campsite.

Latest Check-Ins

We were passing through the CKGR again, this time from Khutse up via Xade to the Matswere gate. As a stopover we booked Xade 2 again in hopes it had been cleared out, as it is in such a beautiful location and a nice 10km away from the main gate.

It has actually been cleared and grated since we last were here 2 years ago (you can now actually see it is a sandy campsite with braai stand, while 2 years ago we had to kind of guess where it was in high grass and panga some away) but it has begun to overgrow with devils thorn again. but no grass yet. Still the most beautiful location at Xade. We ended up camping on the main camp because we were running low on fuel and water, and wanted to be able to be in slops instead of shoes as protection against the thorns. The Xade staff happily let us fill up on water from their borehole and camp at Xade gate. Friendly here!!

We would suggest just checking/asking if Xade 2 has just been maintained, because then you have the most beautiful spot you can have!!

Report Check-In

Xade Campsite NO 2 is indeed much further from the other campsites (10 minutes drive). Nice far views as it is indeed a little higher up. HOWEVER, it is quite dilapidated. It looks like there has been a fire, the big tree is now mostly gone, and the originally sandy open spot is totally overgrown with high grass and loads of devil's thorn. Not very comfortable or safe. Feels a bit meh to charge money for a designated camp site if you don't at least semi maintain it (otherwise might as well wild camp, although that's of course not allowed in the Kalahari). Still beautiful views though.

The drive from Ghanzi to Xade camp is rough. The sand tracks are very deep due to the farmers (trucks) driving there. The underside of our Landcruiser kept scraping through the sand in the middle track, making it impossible to drive faster than 20km/h. Drove in second gear almost the entire way.

When we where there, the water hole was broken and an angry/frustrated elephant was breaking things at the reception office and damaged a camper's tent the night before. We were adviced not to camp there and drive to Piper. It was too late so we took the gamble and camped (and were careful not to spill too much water). Saw the elephant late at night, but it walked past our car. Elephant problem should be solved once the water hole is fixed again, but we didn't feel at ease here

Watch out this is not -05 but it is the Xade Campsite -02!!
Amazing campsite, big protecting tree full of nests and great fire pit. In the morning when we sat at the table to take breakfast, we spotted two curious lionesses staring at us at les than 20meters from the car!! What a wonderfull start of the day :D
With the open field you can spot antilopes and other wildlife.
