Held up after some of the road has broken away/bridge broken. Large vehicles (lorries and chicken busses etc. can't pass) - we were previously advised to take the other route
down to the lake Atitlan via Santa Cruz... research/consider your routes before setting off. This bridge has completely fallen. Charging 50Q to pass.
UPDATE: repairs mostly complete, small delays and no fees as of May 2019.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Some construction still in process, nothing significant to note.
Report Check-InRode from Quetzaltenango to the border today - in general the road is bad, potholed and patchy. Some stretches of gravel and a few stretches of roadworks. But road was open all the way, no problem to pass, no fees or «fees» to be paid. Traffic is moving really slow in many sections. Spent ~ 4,5 hours from Quetzaltenango to the border (166 kms) so average speed is low!
Report Check-InThis road is now perfectly fine and is mostly all new pavement. Some stretches left with a few pot holes but totally fine in our long ford transit.
Report Check-InPassed here without any special delay - maybe 10 minutes. Just one of many similar holdups along this road, caused by road failure or construction work.
Report Check-InWe waited 8 hours to pass since they apparently had another landslide this morning. Since there is no other option to go to La Mesilla bring food/drinks and be patient.
Report Check-InTakes at least 30 minutes to pass through one lane road with semi trucks and buses in both sides. If in a rush may want an alternate route
