From Kazakhstan to Russia (German Passport):
Overall crossing time 2 hours. Mainly due to waiting in a queue between Kazakhstan and Russia. On both sides normal car inspections.
Both countries are in the EEU, so no temporary car import document checked/issued.

Kazakhstan to Russia

Skipped the line with trucks (5km) on Kazakh side. Leaving Kazakhstan took us 10 minutes.

Entering Russia took a lot of time. First the line for immigration form. Park your car and walk past to get a form so you can drive when the barrier opens (we had to go to the left line instead of the right). We skipped the line after since russian locals suggested to, but the officer send us back and made us wait for 2 hours with the other people in line. Then a colleague of him saw us and took us out of the line again to be let in front. The first officer wanted to send us back again, but got orders of his colleague to help us. Then the actual process began and took only 15minutes to get paperwork and minor car check. Overall time 3hours, but could be faster if you find the right guy straight away.

1,5hrs to get through the whole process, Kazakhstan - Russia. There were no distinct lines when we crossed and it was pretty busy. You can indeed pass the trucks. Expect a bit of chaos, but in the end smooth border crossing. They barely checked the car

Report Check-In

We had a very easy crossing on a sunday afternoon.

Kazachstan 10 minutes to get out.

Russia 30 minutes. You can skip all the trucks and as soon as you get to a gate take the left barrier. The right one is crowded, it is for Uzbek, Tajik and Kazachstan people. The left one is for all other countries. If you pass this gate drive straight toward the little white houses where you will find the immigration officers. We could this time again skip the line of the people from neighboring countries. The guys were friendly, helpful and we got in on a business visa in our second (empty) passport... no questions, no problems, no X-ray.

Wednesday arrived 11:00.

Kazakh side took 40 minutes. Relatively straightforward and generally kind officers.

Russian side took 1.5 hours. Nobody seemed to know what was going on or what to do. Very unhelpful border guards, worse than Kyrgyz, Kazakh or Uzbek.
