Description

There is no water in the lake 3.7.2018. In the tourist information they don't tell anything about it, maybe to sell more permits. The scenery is still nice, but it seems that the lake dried out a while ago.

Latest Check-Ins

The lake is incredible beautiful and so is the scenery on the hike from the yurt camps. That being said, it is very touristy (for Central Asian standards). We arrived at 10:30 and there were already quite a few tourists around taking selfies all around the lake, 4x4 travel company cars, a bunch of fancy tents and worst of all, about eight motorboats, some of them on the lake making noise. Every couple minutes, a new group of tourists arrived. For us, it is difficult to say if it’s worth the detour - if you’re looking for solitude, it’s definitely the wrong place.
Lake is full in 2023.

PSA for dog owners, one of the shepherd dogs at the lake is aggressive (not to people).

Lot's of water in the Lake in 2022. Amazing views. Well worth the long ride from Naryn and getting the permit.

There is water in the lake at time of writing. Although we chose to go by horse from the yurt camp, you can get to the lake by car (we saw a couple of stock land cruisers there). Biggest obstacle seems to be the river crossing (about 50-60 cm deep) at the yurt camp. Then there is a rocky climb right before the lake. The track in general is slightly muddy. Would only attempt with 4wd and low gear.

The lake empties and supposedly fills up again, that’s one of the reasons it’s a ‘special lake’. Still pretty empty end of september 2018, we didn’t mind though. It doesn’t look likely you can kayak anytime soon. You can drive up to the lake, we took a horse from the cbt-camp. The permit for the lake is for the whole border area, so also for Chatyr lake.
