The turquoise lagoon is located at the foot of the 5,323 meter high volcano Maipo and is surrounded by snow capped mountain ranges. There is a camping area right at the lake with toilets. The road is recommended only for 4x4s, but thought it was not challenging.

Wonderful view! Its just perfect! But..... the road here...just a few observations. We did it with our VW Kombi, our engine is weak, so if the road is dry you can make it in any vehicle. High clearance is nice. The lake is in 3300 m. But on the road you climb twice to 3700 m! First 10 kilometers are really steep. They told you it is 1,5 h drive, for us 3 hours. However you will be rewarded by the epic view, nice people, crystal clear water, trouts in the river (fishing allowed, ask for instructions at the entrance), senderos. Just check the weather before, snow and strong wind can be tricky. In March during the night it was between -3 and 3 degrees Celsia without wind. During the day with the sun its warm. Season when the Reserve is opened is January till end of March (I assume, more info at website). At the lagoon guys are selling some basic food - fruits, agua caliente, biscuits, sometimes they are cooking dinner.

Check the website before you go because the season is very short and the park can close without prior notice due to weather. The road is generally well maintained and drivable in any vehicle with enough power for the high altitude. It can be busy during the day but few people stay overnight so it is quiet. If you overnight be prepared for cold temps (down to freezing is common). It is an iconic landmark of the province of Mendoza that overlanders should definitely visit when in the area in the summer. Cost is 230 pesos/pers. No charge for the vehicle, camping is free, and you can stay a few days.

we have been there and gate of ranger station was closed...no one there. We waited for about an hour, the the ranger came and told us its closed till january.

The laguna opens from December 20th, for now the gate at the parque entrance is closed. We were greeted with a friendly welcome, they opened the small museo and invited us to wonder the garden and camp here.

Report Check-In

The laguna itself is 3300 m above sea level, we had 18°C on a sunny day, but only 1°C during the night. The laguna and the surrounding are wonderful, but take your time, the trip is gorgeous itself. The journey is the reward!

Very clean and good toilets, in summer there is even a rustic tent bar with soft drinks and beer. The climbing permit for Maipo costs 1660 Pesos/Pers.
