The last 50km to the border is gravel. Landslides are usually only cleared on one lane. It took us 4hrs from Vilcabamba to Pucapamba in our land rover beginning of February.
--
It was ok with our 24 feet motorhome but with back propulsion and double rear wheels. You have to take your time. There are zone around 15 % slope. We take more than 5 hours of drive to join the border but after past some night, there are a lot of village to make break and the view is really scenic and wonderfull. 3 days before us the road was closed after one week of rain, a dozen of landslide but they have equipment to reopen the road fast. After the border, at the Peru side, the road is with asphalte and very good quality.

Latest Check-Ins

We agree with recent comments. We loved the scenic views and the dirt road was in mostly good condition compared to others in our travels. Moderately steep and a lot of switchbacks but we did just fine with our low clearance 2WD van.

Report Check-In

We agree with the most recent post. The road is in really good shape and no potholes or washboard at the moment. It
Between the border and Zumba does have some steep-ish bits with some grip loss... but only that... some grip loss. We have a front wheel drive, rear heavy, under powered vehicle and managed in first gear without any struggle or run up. Maybe it’s different in the rain. In Zumba we got searched and patted down by the military, but they were friendly and it wasn’t so bad. They were looking for weapons and explosive ordinance.

Very good dirt road with great views. The road is in exelent conditions, much better than most of the roads in South America. Many potholes have been very well repaired recently and asphalt works have progressed well. I can imagine that it might be chalenging for a less powerful car/van as the steepness of the road in some parts (only between the border and Zumba) can cause grip loss. Switching to 4x4 allowed us to go up at a very decent speed. No clearance needed, though passing on this road during the wet season might be a completely different story.

We drove this route in our van on 4.8.19 The road towards Tumba was 80% good, but rough in places and down to 1 lane from landslides in several. It is all rough road about 25km before Tumba and entirely afterwards. 5 hours to Tumba, another 2 to the border! phew!

Report Check-In

We crossed today July 9, 2019. The road had a few sloppy-ish mud sections, but they were short. Overall in good condition...hard packed dirt/cobblestone/some loose rocks. Gorgeous!

Report Check-In

Before going to Zumba, you MUST check the weather. We drove after the heavy rain, hundreds of landslides, one of them happened right in front of us. We drove Toyota 4Runner 4x4 and still almost stuck a few times. You should be very careful. The worst part for us was between Progreso and Zumba. Take your time and drive only during daylight.
