Description

11th March 2019, British backpacker was found dead here, after days missing. more details in comment section.

On this path (from San Pedro) to the Indian Nose viewpoint there are 'banditos' active.

On my way in crossed into 2 young boys. Without asking, they will guide you to the viewpoint of Indian Nose. Like 20 minutes before reaching the top, they will stop for a break and announce to wait for some friends. One of the boys went into the bush for about 3 minutes, probably to imform his 'friends' they catched a tourist.

If you will wait, there is a big change you will be robbed by men with big machetes.

I was able to find an excuse to leave (going for a pee -> run!), but there are multiple stories of people getting robbed.

You can try to walk to Indian Nose with a tour guide or doing it yourself. But be aware when seeing see kids.

Latest Check-Ins

We didn't see the messages here so we went without guide. Hike is intermediate. Our host in San Pedro knew about it and didn't unadvice us.

Anyway, 30Q/p at entrance in San Juan for first mirador. Surprise at the top: additional 20Q/p because it's private area. Went downhill to Santa Clara.

Met in total 2ppl on the whole hike.

Everything went ok.

We red on nomada.gt that the body of Catherine was found without clothes and with a lot of knocks/hits.

Report Check-In

From talking to both locals and resident ex-pats on the ground here it sounds very much like Catherine Shaw's death was an accident rather than foul play - another tourist also apparently died on the trail last month (Aug 2019), slipping off the path.

That said everybody recommends taking a guide rather than going alone, if only because the trail is steep and can be treacherous - plus you're less likely to be overcharged for the top section if with a guide.

We booked in San Pedro, paying Q100pp to walk with guide from Santa Clara, reaching the top for sunrise and walking back down to San Pedro in daylight. Steep but lovely walk and the view from the 'nose' was breathtaking.

Today a sad news: a backpacker, Miss Catherine Shaw, was found dead.
Police in Guatemala said the body of a missing Brit was found in a mountainous area of a viewpoint known as the 'Indian nose' in San Juan la Laguna Solola.

The Policia Nacional Civil have launched a criminal investigation to try and determine what happened.

A Facebook page called 'Finding Catherine Shaw' has posted: "Our diligent searchers have found Catherine Shaw’s body at the top of El Naudiz in San Juan La Laguna.

What we know is that she disappeared during the night, between San Pedro and her eco-hostel.

please be super careful and don't visit this area without a guided tour. Don't drive or take tuk-tuks at night, especially alone.

Our overlanding community mourns her lost and our condolences go to family, friends and beloved ones.

Be careful here folks. ALWAYS go with a guide. We did it with a local guide from San Pedro, Juan, and it was so enjoyable. However, a girl from the UK was just found dead up in this area a week after we climbs it. Don’t know what happened but dangerous nonetheless. Please, please, please, for everyone’s sake, go with a guide and be safe.
