The Airtel guy did everything for us. For two sim cards it took an hour, but then it was activated and working. 84 days, 1,5GB/day 820 Rupees total

400rupie for 1,5gb day, about 30 min to activate.
You need an Indian phone number to receive the otp code (ask maybe a friend)

It doesn’t work anymore, useless to go there if you don’t have the phone number of an Indian citizen so they receive the OTP (code) for you. The staff now has their phone numbers registered with the company and cannot get the code on your behalf.

In August 2022, 820 rupees for 1.5GB per day for 84 days (as long as you have a 3month visa), c.450 rupees for the same for 28 days

The prepaid workaround no longer works.
You will need a ‘reference’ ie a number issued in Punjab (that is given by Airtel to the police in case of an issue). Most tourists can just get someone from the hotel to vouch for them, they receive a one time password to be passed onto Airtel. You need your passport.

Got two SIM cards for a total of 1200 INR (no bargaining). Valid 84 days, 1.4 GB per day. Original passport was requested. They can issue more than one SIM per passport. Activated in the spot in about 20 minutes.

Play the game. I just went through the process of applying for a Sim under my name. Of course it didn't work. Then I suggested I pay a fee to have it under someone else's name. He said the Sim is 390. I offered 500 and he accepted. Note: I only need the Sim for 2 weeks which might have played a part. Good luck :)

The SIM cards are pre-activated on somebody else’s name. Activating on your own name is more difficult for foreigners. We understood it’s not an official Airtel service, but sort of a side-hustle of the employees. So you get no receipt or anything. They do want a passport copy for themselves though. We paid 2000 for 2 SIM cards, so 1000 each, but heard others paid 1400 and 1700 for one sim, so might be negotiable. SMS received after activation says the package should be 495 officially. Fingers crossed it keeps working for 84 days for real (Edit: it did. Airtel app shows you how many days are left).

It’s on the opposite side of the street (Main Street). The shop has a Red/White Logo.

Don’t fill out any form if they ask you too. We did that at first but it will take few days before it gets active. Make sure you get a pre activated sim and don’t leave the store before you have a working SIM card. We had to go back 3 times.
The first time they told us we just have to wait a few hours but it was bullshit because they had to activate a few things and change some settings.
