Advised by people of Fossil Butte National Monument. Motorized vehicles not allowed from jan-april. There is a gate, but you can easily open it. Some noise from train and highway. We could hear elk nearby.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
We drove up the road about 1/2 mile and found several flat spots on the Mesa with views of the butte. Full strength cell signal. Road in was steep and rocky with ruts.
Report Check-In2 other campers. Wide relatively flat areas. Nice views. Tried to go further up but it got really rutty so turned around. 5 bars T-Mobile
Report Check-InTrail to this spot is closed Jan 1-Apr 30. There’s a barbed wire fence at the opening to the trail. Move it out of your way but be sure to put it back before continuing. A short distance up is a clearing big enough for several rigs. The cows love this spot and they make quite a bit of noise but didn’t bother us otherwise. Keep it clean and enjoy!
Report Check-InGreat spot! We spent two days here relaxing before hitting the National Monument. Large clearing once you get to the top. One other camper was here when we arrive but enough space to spread out. Cows free roaming the area and they are not afraid to come right into your camp! We also saw a lot of gophers and deer the morning we left.
Road in is still rutted at the top but easy to avoid.
Report Check-InReally awesome spot! Grateful for this free area after a day of exploring the monument.
As others have mentioned, the road in is still uneven and rutted but doable.
There are dead animal remains towards the beginning of the open pit. Can’t tell what it is, no skull.
Do not leave your Starlink on the ground. I woke up to my van rocking, saw about 30 cows surrounding me. One adult was rubbing her body against my ladder lol
and two baby calves had knocked my Starlink over and were smashed on top of it rubbing their bodies up against it - maybe because it’s warm?!!
A half hour later I woke back up to three calves playing with something on my front right wheel… I didn’t realize they were so playful and mischievous, very cute… But make sure everything is secured before you go to bed.
Relatively doable rocky and bumpy road in, but once you hit the wide clearing there's plenty of space. Good service and quiet, minimal distant highway/train noise. No issues besides a field mouse managing to find his way in, eviction is work in progress
Report Check-InTurn off the pavement just after power lines. Either open gate or cattle guard entry. Climb up the gravel road to the open flat spot on top. Ok for 2 wheel drive, avoid the rut and clearance is not an issue. Lots of space, mostly all flat, sage brush but no shade. 360 view, uninterrupted view of Fossil Butte. Private, quiet, good for dogs. Verizon 4 bars LTE. I’d stay here again if in traveling through.
Report Check-InGreat place to stay. No shade but the wind makes for a great breezy through the van. Full service with Verizon. Awesome spot to post up and get some quiet work done. Dogs had plenty of room to roam. 2.5 days here and a golf cart came through.
Report Check-InThe stars are amazing but something is screaming in the night. Are these the elk? I almost peed myself. the site is private, the road wasn't too bad. somewhat difficult to find in the dark but the sign about winter motorized vehicles being forbidden was helpful. I've also learned to watch my dot as I get close to a spot.
Local trail heads have signs forbidding overnight parking so I'm glad to have found this place. Bring your polar fleece because it's 38 degrees here in mid-late June.
ATT cell service is strong-all bars showing and Internet.
Report Check-InThe stars are amazing. nearby trailheads and turn outs say "no overnight parking" This place is incredible.
Report Check-InStayed down near the road, and found a
out the larger camping area up the road from the coordinates. a great place to land for the night...
There is a gate as others have noted. Private. One other car there, we were there with a van. A bit windy but great Verizon LTE service all around. Can walk in any direction. Very close drive to Monument.
Report Check-Ingood road in, but tires lines are deep, either straddle the tire marks and get bushes brushing your car, or something with higher clearance. I made it with a 40' converted schoolbus.
Report Check-InGreat semi flat area with a couple of fire rings. It does have a 4G LTE signal and with our cell booster was able to work online :-)…. The views are fantastic!
Report Check-InBLM. Just up the road from Lisa.thyrion’s spot. (Which was taken by an RV). Lots of cool vistas a short ride up the road. Quite
Report Check-InTried to dig for fossils. No luck but looks like could camp but no big trailers
