Description

Two buildings, the archive is now also located on the square.
One building is 55.000 per person, visiting two buildings is 80.000 (march 2020), one buildings is roughly 1-1,5 hour. Closed on Mondays.

Nice collection, but if you’re not an art enthousiast, the detour from Khiva just for the museum would probably be just a bit too much.

(Read comments for a different opinion) :-)

Latest Check-Ins

The ticket price îs now 82 000 USZ and only one building could be visited at the time when we were here. It is worth the time and money, though. The collection is incredibile. We also slept behind the museum, as it was convenient for us. It was quiet starting with 23.00, when the music from the amusement park stoped.

Price now 70000 pp. Only one building open.

I HIGHLY recommend you watch the film
„The desert of forbidden art“
before visiting the museum - or even before considering coming to Nukus. Afterwards you will want to see the art in the museum, because the story behind is so special! And then, once in the museum, you will recognize the most important masterpieces and remember the artist‘s life and history behind it. And you will understand the importance of this museum and why it’s wirth even a bigger detour.

It’s available for streaming on amazon.com, but you need a US registered credit card to view it. Maybe you find an other option for europeans, then please post it here as the film and the museum are both worth seeing!

Most of the important works are in the first building, if you are short on money (or time), just pay for that part - and for streaming the film :-)

Prices rise:
One building: 55.000
Two buildings: 80.000
I will update prices in original description here on iOverlander for those who don’t read comments.
We went only to the first building, but I fear most of the avantgarde paintings are in the second building, as most of the exhibits in the first building is ethnographic.
So if you are interested in avant-garde paintings, go to both buildings. If you just want to sneak into that kind of art, one is enough.

Some interesting works here, but not a must-see, in our opinion. If you’re travelling through Nukus, you might enjoy a short artsy break from driving through the steppe but we were a bit disappointed after going to Nukus intentionally for the museum.

While the paintings and artists are very interesting (especially when you love early Soviet art), the audio guide in English is terrible and also the descriptions are short and most of the times not well translated. Just use Google or another guide if you really want to visit.

Later on our drive through Uzbekistan, we were very pleased by the museum in the Ark of Bukhara, we definitely recommend going there!

Tickets now 48,000 for one and 72,000 for two buildings. Apparently 200,000 to take a camera in, but smartphones seemed OK. 1.5 hours per building is about right.

Building 1 has over half of the best paintings but fewer of them, a mildly interesting ethnography section and a weak history section.

Building 2 has a more extensive painting collection and just under half of the best of the collection.

Great Collection in two houses. Forget arr museum visit at Tashkent if you heading to Nukus. Famous blue bull painting is shown at the secund house actually.

Nice collection, but if you’re not an art enthousiast, the detour from Khiva just for the museum would probably be just a bit too much.
