Description

The ruin of Stokes Castle is a historic site. It is reached over a short gravel road from Austin, signposted at the western end of town. There is a big gravel (dusty with wind) parking area with one pic-nic table and a fire pit ... plus a great view of the basin and the mountains. I was alone on a Friday night.

Nice spot with beautiful sunset and view, but per Gaia maps it is not BLM land or other federal land. Maybe city or county? We drove up the dirt road just a little further to a small pull out on left that is on/or at least closely borders start of BLM land to get out of public/tourist spot and avoid any issues. Room for one van/ truck/car only, no big rigs. Somewhat level side to side, but back is up a little backed in. Good for a one night stop over passing through the area.

This place is serene and perfect! Gorgeous views!

Quiet with a beautiful view. 2-3 bars Verizon LTE. Nice long road for walks with doggos. Nobody but me there for overnight, just a couple people stopped by in the morning.

This was an amazing stop! We had no trouble with the half mile dirt road to the top, it was in great condition. The view was awesome and the sunset incredible. There are 2 picnic tables and a fire ring which we had a small campfire in. We were the only ones there all night. Lots of room for big rigs. It was so quiet we had a great nights sleep! I highly recommend this stop!

Cool spot! Snow on the road up has melted but there are a few piles around the site from plows. There was one other party parked last night. There was a trickle of touring visitors in the morning.

PS - I highly recommend Grandmas’s Kitchen for dinner and/or drinks- the owners are amazing and welcoming of visitors!

Great spot for a quick overnight... awesome view of the surrounding area. The .6 of a mile dirt road was not in bad shape, made it fine with 2wd.

The sunset!!!!! There is about 8 inches of snow BUT we made it in with our 32’ Skoolie pulling a 17’ camp trailer. The road was plowed BUT still very snow covered.

This is a great spot as described. I have service. Was here with a few other people. Easy convenience to town and gas.

Great road up to Castle with plenty of space for multiple vehicles. Road actually continues past Castle but I didn’t explore. Historic site is fenced in but signs and walk around solid. Nice breeze (it was 100f degrees upon arrival and now 84f with slight wind, lovely for a summer evening). Smoke from distant fires created a beautiful sunset yet air quality is good. Have seen four visitors since arrival and very little traffic noise so I would rate this quiet. Very easy to get to and like others said views are lovely.

Stunning sunset and scenery. Very easy to get to in an suv. Turn right just before the gas station as you’re heading into Austin. On the far west end of town. At the fork in the road keep right and you’ll arrive at the old castle.

it is exactly as described. I will say that I was a little worried getting my large trailer up here. I didn't realize that the turns were so sharp. I didn't managed to hit the mountainside or anything, so I guess it's doable. no one else has mentioned that there is internet up here. I don't have very many bars of Verizon 4G LTE, but nobody is competing for it, so it's working great! Even with the road, which is extremely smooth even though windy and steep, I would definitely come again.

A good location. Flat surface. Clean with garbage bin. Little to no traffic. Great sis set views of the valley. Some night spotlights on the outer of the “castle”.

T-Mobile Reception: 1 bar of LTE (I able to load websites)

AT&T Reception: 1 bar of LTE (extremely slow and poor)

Great location with amazing views. As described table, fire pit and trash can. We had a deer walking around most of the evening and had some amazing views of the stars and Milky Way. Some road works in town below.

The parking lot is a little bit sloped, but no signs prohibiting overnight stays. The dirt road on the way up is in relatively good condition. 1 or 2 bars TMobile LTE

Great location to camp out. Lots of spaces. No “no” signs!

Easy to get to off HWY 50 with plenty of room for a rig. Beautiful views as mentioned before. Must see and would be a sweet easy overnight stop.

A great spot surrounded by many mountain ranges so there are some beautiful views. The road up had some patches of ice.

Arrived at top with no issues and weren’t joined by anyone all night. A few people came up in the morning to take some photos. We loved this place and would stay again. Especially since it is beside the only gas in town (and only gas for miles which was very expensive. Fuel up before you get to the middle of Nevada!!).

Awesome boondocking spot with a perfect sunset view. A little ice on the dirt road up. Imagine could be tough if they get a decent amount of snow
