Description

MODERATOR NOTE: User reports this place is permanently closed.

Hotel Oberland is roughly 15 minutes south of La Paz (en coche, 1h en bus) in the town of Mallasa if you're coming from the north, research the bypass loop to avoid driving through the city. More of a parking lot for overlanding vehicles, it's not the best place to pitch a tent. But it is a great place to meet other travelers and swap notes about Bolivia and Peru. Wifi is decent by Bolivian standards, and there is a kitchen above the campground that may be free to use, but we never bothered to ask.

Payed 120.-/2 persons, June 2016, overpriced!

Update September 2019: Bs 70/person

permanently closed, out of service since 2021, we ll keep finding where to sleep.

Report Check-In

THE place to stay near La Paz. Save parking, no restrictions, best and cleanest shower and bathrooms so far.
Staff is very nice, helpful and flexible (had som issues with our van, so we changed several times from camping to hotel and back). Highly recommend, as well as the city tours with Gert!

Report Check-In

We were alone at this site so everything was nice and clean. Great showers. Friendly personal. We were allowed to stay at the regular parking lot. Wifi is unstable. Try to get a SIM card. It‘s the better choice. 😉 70 per person.

Report Check-In

Wifi was most times not available or unstable. Bathroom would only be cleaned when we asked for cleaning. Waste bins were full, but they didn't empty it although we asked for.
Bs 70/person totally overpriced

At the last day Jamie, the manager, came to us and explained all the problems and the price.
Bathroom cleaning: the cleaning ladies forget to go down to the camping area. Wifi: is unstable because the neighbours try to log in.
High price: because of the high electricity costs in the camping area, the owner increased the price by Bs10/person this year (before he lose money with the campers!?!?). The campers can use the pool.
We told him we only payed Bs 25/person at the Titicaca lake also with wifi and electricity. And we asked why he dont't change the wifi system - his answer: this is not possible.

For us his explanation was only blablabla.
Expect no change in price and service.
The only good things are: it is quiet and secure.
Next time we go to the Airport parking.

Colectivo to Plaza San Francisco is Bs 2,60/person (No. 43 and 902), but in the evening we only got a Colectivo back on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday we took a Uber Bs ~ 50,00 back.

Report Check-In

The place is totally overpriced - 140 BS per night for 2 persons. WIFI is bad, showers are ok but the argument that you can use the hotel facilities die the high price is ridicules - jacuzzi is closed, pool is cold, for the sauna you have to pay extra. No price value ratio! The only reason we came to this place was Gert the German guide - and the tour with him was fantastic! But you can contact him from any place [email protected] or Whatsapp +59162517448 or Mobile +59177554008

Report Check-In

We stayed for one night and used the jacuzzi as ot was included in the 70.-pp... ok but for sure overpriced!!!

Report Check-In

Place is absolutely overpriced with 70 bolivar per person a night. The internet works unstable, the pool was not heated (no drama but for this price...), printing costs you 2.5 bolivar per paper...it seems just way too expensive for Bolivia. The place itself is ok and safe, and they also refill your empty gas bottle via bottle transfer for 30 Bolivar, which was fair (though have an adapter at hand). What is fair is the safe long-storage parking for 18 Bolivar a day.

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

Price now 70 Bol pP, bit expensive for this place. WiFi works now faster, pool is usable with clean water. Toilets very modern and clean.
Highly recommend is the city tour with Gert, ask in the reception for him.

Report Check-In

Now it's 70 Bol. My reason to stay was "Gert the German Guide". He has a big knowlegde about La Paz, the kulture and the people. I'm sure you will not find a better Guide! If he wouldn't be there, i wouldn't stay in that place. He doesn't work for the Oberland, He work's around the corner - motobike rent. Place is nice but overpriced.

Report Check-In

All was already said, BUT now Price is 70bs, i discussed with Jamie because website is not updated, i may understand from a local Guy not from an english one....ok site is nice but as Jamie argue for services as daily clean toiles, since 2 days nobody came...wifi is really really poor, my tigo sim card is working fast and well...so don't say that an hotel can't do better...and fiber is just a mirage...i am ok to pay but i want the promised services especialy when the manager septembre a long comment for, which is not.

Report Check-In

Hello Overlanders.
As La Paz begins its transition into winter and the dry season, I thought I should post an update about what is happening at Hotel Oberland.
The chamber of tourism in La Paz recently completed an inspection of the hotel and as a consequence, has awarded a new official rank of 4 STARS to us. This means that we are now officially a 4 star hotel. This is due to the extensive renovation and improvements we've made since purchasing the hotel in August 2018.
The installation and inspection of a mains gas supply is now complete. So in May 2019, we hope that this will be activated by the local town council and free us of our dependency on gas bottles. All rooms, the camping bathroom area, and more importantly, the swimming pool, will have access to gas 24/7. This is fantastic news for our pool, as it will be heated with gas to a constant 32 degrees.
Thanks to this gas supply, and our dedication to improvement, the sauna and steam room are just a few short weeks away from completion. The new sauna was completed just days ago with new Pine wood, and the steam room has been completely tiled for style and comfort.
Some slightly sad news is that the local mayors office has raised the prices of local taxes and the cost of electricty in our area. Sadly, this has affected us and we've been forced to raise our prices by 10BOB to 70bs per night. I sincerely wish we didn't have to do this, but sadly we had to react to our growing costs.
On a more positive note, we still have lots of work planned for the hotel - A new menu, more variation of drinks and a plan to make our camping area better and more comfortable. We have a new playground for the young Overlanders and a completely refurbished swimming pool which is open every day from 9am until 8pm.
Finally, we finally have access to better internet. So now all campers can enjoy a much faster internet connection for video calling, uploading photos or whatever takes your fancy.
Overlanders at our hotel can now enjoy fast internet, 24 hour security, gas bottle refill, electricty, hot showers, access to the pool, sauna and steam room, beautiful gardens and of course, all pets are more than welcome!

I'm always open to feedback, so if you are passing by in the near future, please feel free to seek me out and introduce yourself to me. Meanwhile, I wish everyone safe travels and happy camping, whever it may be.
Jamie (Operations manager, Hotel Oberland)

Now 70 BOL per person, indoor-pool ready to be used.

Report Check-In

Pool is still under construction. (Should be finished by 1st week of april.) We didn’t stay as it is 70bol a night/a person sleeping in your own vehicle now. Too expensive for us. We went to Camping Colibri instead. What an awesome place that is!! (50bol a night.)

Report Check-In

Hi Everyone, Jamie from hotel Oberland here. just wanted to post an update on our hotel facilities and respond to some of the recent comments.

Our pool is still under renovation unfortunately. This is due to a huge delay by the ceramic tiles supplier, but we are working to finish all renovations as soon as possible.

It is true that that Swiss owner sold the hotel in August, but I'd also like to say that nothing on our menu has changed. The menu and the preparation methods used for meals are still the same as they were last year and the year before. We've added one new chef to our kitchen team, and he has learned all techniques from the 3 existing chefs.

We do charge 60Bob per person per night. While some people may find this price high (for Bolivia), please remember that the cost includes a secure parking facility with hot showers and wash facilities, which are cleaned daily. It also includes 24 hour security, free Wi-Fi, and the use of our pool and sauna (currently under renovation). All customers are able to connect to an electricity outlet and there is no cap on the amount of energy you require for the duration of your stay. My staff are all friendly and helpful and it's not easy to find good customer service in Bolivia. As such, we believe that 7.5 Euros (60 Bob) per night is not unjust.

Finally, as many have mentioned; yes, our WiFi is slow. We know this and as a business we also have to suffer the same frustration. However, since our hotel is located outside of the city, we do not have access to Fiber Optic, high speed internet. And when we have many customers visiting us, each person connecting to our WiFi will affect the speed for other users. If there was anything we could do to resolve this problem, we would do it. We have tried switching providers, but the new provider is no better than the old one. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, in that at the end of November, Fiber Optic cables were installed in our town. We are now waiting for this new provider to activate this new service so that we may subscribe to it, however the provider is unable to give us a time frame right now.

We value our Overlander client base very much, and my staff and I enjoy meeting different people each week and learning about their lives and adventures. Since taking ownership of the hotel, we have worked very hard to improve it and make the experience of all of our customers pleasant and enjoyable.

I hope to see some of you again in the future, and can't wait to meet more Overlanders who haven't passed out way yet.

Thank you and please stay safe. :)

A nice place to spend some nights here and to visit La Paz. We would recommend doing this with Gert. He is German and lives many years in Bolivia.

the camping is way to expensive. Pool was closed and they still wanted 60 Bol pp. Showers are clean and hot with good pressure, but there are only 2. The restaurant offers typical swiss dishes, the cheese fondue was terrible! The few meat dishes were okay, but don't make the mistake and order one of the fondues. The swiss owner sold the place August 2018, and you feel it.

Still 60 bol per person and per night (pricey for Bolivia)
2 spaces for camping : one just near to the hotel and one downstairs (entry by another way).
Wifi is really slow and doesn’t work anymore if there are too much people.
Possibility to fill up our bottle of gas (2kg for 50 bol)
Laundry (18 bol per kilo)
Bathroom are very clean, hot and have good pressure
No dump station but it’s possible to throw up your black water in the toilet.
Nice staff.

Hello Overlanders, I'm Jamie, the operations manager at Hotel Oberland. Just writing to let you know that our pool and sauna are closed for renovations at the moment. We hope to complete all the work by mid November, and open up our new, bigger pool with gas heating - keeping the pool at a constant 32 degrees. The new pool area will also include a new sauna and steam room. In the meantime, our camping area is open as usual and my staff will happily attend to your needs. Safe travels.

Report Check-In

This place really fitted our needs. It’s located in a small village just on the outskirts of la Paz. Village has shops &, restaurants. 5 min walk to valley of the moon. Short cheap taxi trip into town. It has outdoor space. We used the pool , the playground and the little football pitch. Staff were helpful. Really hot, slick, modern, clean showers. Lots of upgrading being done to the hotel part. Restaurant serves good fondue. Great spot for meeting other overlanders.

Report Check-In

Nice place. Met the new very nice owners who hope to improve place further. They even filled the hot tub for us so our son could "swim" as the pool was too cold for him. Hot shower here was great! (Better on women's side). Paid 60 bolivianos per person. 5yo free. Included electric, water, wifi, etc.

Report Check-In

Paid 120BS, hot showers. Wifi is excruciatingly slow, It logs you out after every tortuous session so you have to try to re log in again.

Report Check-In

nothing special but convienient as driving with a big rig in La Paz is a challenge. clean toilets. very poor wifi and expensive at 120 bol. i am told camping colobri is better but not suited for big rigs. in all little choice. taxi from oberland to the green line 20bol. only other choice is the airport in El Alto. but lots colder and higher.

Report Check-In

When you get to front of hotel you must register first with original passport. Price is now 60B pp. Camping area was full when we got here so they put us in upper lot (nicer) as hotel was not open so not busy (will be under new ownership at end of July but same manager). Laundry 18b per kg; down the street it's 12b. Quiet at night. Wifi slow and over last two days crapped out a lot. Hopefully new owner will rectify this issue.

a great placr to relax...we felt like in Holidays. hot shower, clean toiletts, swimmingpool, green place to relaxe. possibilitx to fill your gastank for 27 bol. theres an office room. you also can buy wood for 15 bol and use the fireplace....everything arround and friendly stuff wich helps with everything. we enjoyed our time there a lot!!!

Report Check-In

We got our import papers for the car extended to 6 month (only possible in La Paz) and parked our car 3 months at hotel Oberland to go back to Europe. We felt very secure about the place. The owner is very helpfull, the hotel clean and correct with delicious breakfast and good food at the restaurant and possibility to refill our argentinian gas bottles.

Report Check-In

We stayed here for a couple of days and were able to leave our car here while we went to Germany for 5 weeks. We had a good and safe feeling with that.

The camping is more like a parking with walls around. At night there is a lot dog action going on.
Shower is really nice and warm. It is good place to explore the city from but it is not the right place to enjoy yourself and hang around. For this Camping Colibri is much more recommended.

If you want to stay in the hotel I can't really recommend it. Rooms were cold, a bit rundown and the shower was not great either. Better stay in your vehicle.

Overall the place is good and the owner quite nice.

Report Check-In

ok place behind hotel. easy to get to town by micro for 2.6 Bob. you can also take a micro to Los Pinos and then a gondola up to town (great views). place is a bit expensive 60pppn but you do get power, clean toilets, hot shower and a kitchen with an oven(!!!).

Report Check-In

Nice place. We stayed here because it was the only solution to refill our bottle. Very helpful owner. Grassy area, calm, playground for kids, clean bathroom. The WiFi is better near the reception.

Report Check-In

Showers are hot beside this an ok. place. For big rigs probably the only official campsite in La Paz. We moved to Colibri. Was cheaper and nicer.

Report Check-In

Place is ok and safe. From hear you need about 40 minutes to the center with the bus/minibus. Bathrooms were clean expect on the weekend. There is a Pool, but it looked not very nice for us to go in (so we didn't). WiFi was "mas o menos" and not always working. Only good for WhatsApp and Skype. Paid 60 Bolivianos per person and night.

Verry good Place for us and our Big Rig. 60 Bol/ Night/ Pers.
Restaurant is verry tasty for us.
Internet at the Campsite could be better.

What else to say? There is a playground for kids. The pool is indoor and very nice. There is also a sauna. It's a very nice and big area with rooms, restaurant (a la carte), kiosk with daily menue (30Bol) and zhey also offer icecream. Wifi was fast and always available. Next to the hotel are 2 ATM's ans small shops to buy everything. Walter knows a lot of people like mechanics for different brands. You can park upstairs with your "small" van. Big vans/trucks can park downstairs. You have the choice between 3 different bathrooms - Two are located upstairs (1 with warm shower, 1 only toilet) and one is downstairs which is new and including hot shower. The toilets and shower were always clean. Check the photos. You have to pay more then in other places but it is absolutly worth the money if you compare price/service. From the Oberland you can visit Valle de la Luna which is in walking distance. You can go with taxi in town or with colectivos. Service at the reception.

Taxi custa aproximadamente 40 Bs e minibus 2,60.

Our second stay at the oberland; and our second choice, as the Colbri camping down the road was full. I think 120bob is too much for a shower and a car park, but it's an overlander tradition. We drove from Arica, Chile, which is at sea level, so really all we wanted was a secure place to pass out! Showers were not hot at night when we arrived, perhaps out of gas. WiFi doesn't reach the camping area, which is disappointing.

awesome quad tour to valley de luna around the corner. 200 bol per quad for two hours. good equipment and guide. name is MTB tours.

Report Check-In

Very secure place to stay near La Paz. Bs120 for two people and a camper per night. Fantastic clean toilets and hot showers. BBQ grill and picnic table. Electricity points in the parking lot (we didn't have to pay extra as some say?) use of pool (although closed due to maintenance) very friendly, helpful staff. Wifi is very slow, managed a call home, social media updates but could not update blog. Water also available.

Report Check-In

A nice safe place to stay, especially when you just want to briefly visit the city and move on - you can count on the h. Oberland. Big rigs - just go here and don't look further.
Decent wifi, but had better in the city (or entel 4g).
For normal, not big rigs: if you are staying longer, it's quite expensive for Bolivian standards - for roughly the same price, we found an airbnb with secure parking and better internet, 15min walking distance from city centre.

Report Check-In

Good if you are arriving to La Paz and want a quick and easy solution to stay. Ok-ish wifi, but nothing exciting - we had better at other places in La Paz. Very nice and clean bathroom and showers. A bit expensive - for 120BOB per car(2 people) and sleeping in your car - for roughly the same price we found an airbnb room closer to city centre, with double bed, better internet and secure parking.

Report Check-In

Well known meeting place for overlanders. Excellent shower, well protected, electricity, wifi only at the lobby, no facilities for dish or laundry washing. Good connections to La Paz. BOB 120 (2 adults, camper)

Report Check-In

Nice place to stay not too far from center and meeting other overlanders.
But very much overpriced!
The Röschti and the Chateaubriand was good, the Lama not - all too expencive... Friendly owner, very clean and good service.

As others mentioned. WiFi worked fine in the upper parking lot. Good and fair priced BBQ during the day near the reception.

good place to stay near the city. its easy and scenic with the teleferico verde to go downtown. daily cleaned toilets medium wifi. we were able to upload fotos. very good Stroganof and Zürigschnetzlets at the restaurant.

Report Check-In

Good place worked perfectly for us. Wifi was avilable across the hotel and good speed. Clean toilets and shower. We parked on top and think below parking was too crowded and may be little suffocating. It was super quiet all night. Electricity avilable from the wall and best part valley de luna walking distance. Big rigs will fit comfortably here..

Now they charge 60bol pP for an uneven parking lot. Electricity didn't work. Internet was so so. Dogs on the street were barking constantly. Not a good value for what you get but met nice people. Follow the little road to the left of the reception. The gate is after one right turn.

Frequent collectivos for the City Center. We advise you to take the gondola (teleferico). We took the yellow one, 3 bol /ride/ pers.
Possibility to buy 20l drinking water bottle at the restaurant of the hôtel.

Nice spot to meet overlanders. We paid 50bob per person. Clean bathroom and hot showers.

Report Check-In

Nice place! But be aware which services are included and which aren't. We had to pay extra for the sauna even though it wasn't listed in the English information sheet (but is on the Spanish sheet). They also tried to charge us twice for our meal on the restaurant, so be sure to carefully check your bill before you pay!

Report Check-In

One of THE places to meet other overlanders! The camping is more of a parking lot, there is only a little grass to put up a tent. The bathrooms are one of the nicest and very clean. The restaurant offers a wide range of swiss food incl Fondue. The owner is very helpful and friendly. We liked it! Paid 100 BOL per day for two persons. If you need a room (ex because your car is in the workshop) you get a generous discount.

Report Check-In

Just south of La Paz this hotel has a camping area (more of a parking lot) with nice restrooms and showers and an area to grill with a big table. The restaurant is great and you can eat some really good Swiss food there. It's also walking distance to Valley of the Moon. It's a bit pricey (50B/p) and power is extra. The wifi is also horrible but there are a few Internet cafés nearby.

Report Check-In

Checked it out but decided not to stay. Not a great spot for motorcycles and tents. Small grass area to pitch a tent at end of large carpark. Possibly safe enough to leave a tent and gear whilst out on your motorcycle. Use of hotel swimming pool was tempting. Decided Colibri was a better option for bikers.

Report Check-In

The top area is open for vehicles and has a great view 180 degrees of the valley - unlike the lower area which is a bit of a dungeon and isw next door to three of the nastiest, noisiest mongrels you would want to encounter on the loose.

Swimming pool and restaurant available. WiFi a bit erratic but overall decent.

100 Bolivanos per night for two of us and vehicle

Report Check-In

Pretty fancy place. All the amenities. Enjoy the usable internet, might be a while before you have any again. All overlanders were given 1 day notice that they had to leave to make room for a giant group of German RVs which we thought was pretty lame. 50 B per person per night.

Report Check-In

To go there don't use the way trough the city - you'll stuck in traffic jam for hours. There is a good bypass to reach the place. The "camping area" is ugly, but you have the chance to meet interesting people, sharing informations and eating some delicious suisse food. Use the "yellow bus" for the city center, it's cheaper than taxi and collectivos.

Hotel Oberland is roughly 15 minutes south of La Paz, in the town of Mallasa if you're coming from the north, research the bypass loop to avoid driving through the city.

One of the most famous meeting point for Overland traveler in South America. It is small parking lot of the hotel Oberland. Place is not level and the car has to be leveld. Very nice and clean bathrooms. Free WIFI. If it is full, you have to park very close to each other. The food in the restaurant is great! Laundry for 15 Bolivianos / kg.

You can take a taxi to the mall "Mega Center" (18-20 Bolivianos / ride). There is also an excellent supermarket where you can buy grocery much cheaper than in Peru.

This is one of the key overlander meeting spots as everyone seems to come here. The Hotel Oberland is a Swiss-owned hotel in the Mallasa district of La Paz. Mallasa is around a 20-30 minute collectivo ride from the centre (costs B2.20 per person). The Hotel can be reached by crossing the Valle de la Luna from El Alto thereby avoiding having to drop down into the rabbit warren of the main city. Spotless toilets and hot showers, a pool, Jacuzzi, good restaurant and cafe, laundry service and a very warm welcome from the staff make this a lovely place to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of La Paz.
