Here you can buy insurance for 30 days. It only covers Argentina and not chile so this is useful going eastbound to Argentina. Insurance for 30 days was 1,000 Argentinian pesos (on 27th Feb 2020).
We did this on a Thursday at 7pm
Fyi there is also an insurance office for chile further west at the chilean migration/aduana

It's still open and working; paid ARS 1000 each for my pickup truck and motorhome, 30 days fixed period (they no longer issue insurance for any other periods). This was about USD 16 per vehicle per month, about half the price of purchasing the same insurance in Chile.

This was useful for us because we sold our US California plates van by selling and changing plates to Washington and the new owners needed insurance for the new washington plates to enter argentina. We did this on a Saturday at 5pm
