Description

Center/office for visiting the elephants, forest, all information, etc.
Call ahead to arrange everything. This is not a zoo, so the elephants need to be somewhere you can get to and rangers need to track them to be able to show them to you.

Had a really cool experience, although things were not as neatly organised for me as others have described.

I phoned the usual number ahead of time and explained when I wanted to come, I was told no problem. I was told to come at 8:30 but no one showed up until 9. I was then taken to the rangers home where I paid the 500,000, but as I didn't have my own vehicle I was also asked to pay 48,000 for fuel for the moto (this is the real fuel price). Then after some more waiting I was taken by one of the rangers to the walk's starting point.

I was super lucky because we found them very easily - the father/son elephant duo have now been fitted with GPS collars. We spent an hour walking closely with them. The rangers give them exactly the space they need.

All in all a very good experience, just be a little patient at the start :)

Also I asked about going to see a nearby liana bridge but they asked for an extra 250,000 which I thought was too much. I've put details of a guy you can contact in Nzerekoré instead.

Absolutely amazing experience!
As described below, call Sacko on the number given and he will arrange a ranger if he himself is not available (we have been with Michele; a calm and friendly guy) and a date for your trip (for us, it was two days after our call).
Price: 500k GF/person-100% worth it as per our opinion!
The hike's details (exact starting point, starting hour) are given by in the early morning of the hike itself.
We were taken to the male couple and could watch them eating (about 10m away from us) and followed them a bit on their move, the whole experience took around 3 hours.

Report Check-In

You really should do the elefants. Still 500K GF / Person, but it is worth.
We drove with our car to another village, where we met our guide.
Everthing well organized & no extra charges.

Report Check-In

Fantastic. Highlight of Guinea and possibly all my time in West Africa so far! I tried to contact Sacko beforehand, but he was having some trouble with his phone, so we really only properly spoke when I turned up on their doorstep- they didn't have any real forewarning. The next day we took off, and although we walked for a very long time with no luck, at the end we finally we spotted a couple. It was magnificent! We were so close, and there were zero other tourists. There were literally times when we were barely 10 meters away, or running in the opposite direction while they marched towards us, eating leaves. Wonderful! The whole thing, everything included, was 500k. There was no separate guide fee, and it was all paid together at the end, to Alexis. A great experience overall, and the office handled it really well- professional from beginning to end, and with none of that stupid nonsense you'd see in other places, like feeding the elephants to lure them or some BS like that. It's extremely well done by people who genuinely care about the well-being of the animals first, and deserves to be supported. Heads up: the hiking gets rough- good shoes and long pants/sleeves are a must!

We as well had a great experience with the guides of the center. We had to make two runs on two days to find the elephants, not so easy to locate them, but it was a super experience and absolutely stunning when we finally found two of these beautiful animals in their natural environment.

Report Check-In

Totally worth it. Visit are 500.000 PP.
All the people of the organization and people that live in the village are really nice. Money for the visit are really important to preserve this animals. We are really happy for the day we spent here.

Report Check-In

Totally worth it!
We called 4 days ahead so they had enough time to track the elephants.
The day we had arranged to see them, we were picked up earlier than planned because elephants can move fast and there were 2 rangers walking behind them to make sure we get to see them. We had to drive about 50km to where they were. There are 3 families and one male couple (let the rangers tell you details) in the region and we were brought to the latter. We were allowed to spend as much time with them as we liked and we walked quite a long distance together with those beautiful animals.
We payed
500.000 per person
200.000 per guide
If you think that’s expensive, google the fees in other countries are (to see savanna elephants, not forest elephants together with masses of other tourists). We‘ve been to southern and eastern Africa, and can tell the difference. This was definitely very special because it was just the elephants and us - and that very close.
Those forest elephants are very endangered and the people you are playing are doing their best to protect them. Talk to them and they will explain details.
A part of the money goes directly to the villagers in proximity of the elephant sighting - and we handed out that part of the money in person.
Call Sacko to arrange everything:

In the month of August it is impossible to see elephants. They have explained to us that starting in November because they leave the jungle to look for fruit. The price is 500000 FG per person

Report Check-In

Went there today. Higher ground clearance is required to reach it with a car, in our case I had to walk the last 250m there.
However, the price I was told was 500.000 GNF (~60 USD) per person. It does include a guide, but at least for us, it is way too much. Sadly, we had to skip.

Elephants are near Liberian border in the dry season so not possible but did take a guided tour in the forest. €10 pp entry to park and €5 for guide regardless of number of persons. This was a 5 hour walk and you can pay in Francs or €. You can see birds and trees but not animals. The eco-tourism men are keen you take two or more guides/guards but Barre supports the need for one, and given there are no animals this is enough. Eco-tourism men also tried to charge €5 for camping and Barre squashed this too. Not sure free camping will be forever, hopefully a toilet and shower are added when they do start charging. Good to support the park.

Report Check-In

Mr Barre is lovely, he allowed us to camp outside the info centre in our campervan (using the pump to collect a couple of buckets of water to wash the mud off!)

We walked into town to get food from one of the many stalls and have a few drinks at a bar. Lots of hiking options and although we could have tried to see elephants this would have been a long journey involving a bad road, worse road ( by Moto-taxi) and long hike so we choose not to do this.

You will find the chief here or further down at the campement. They arrange hikes with a guide for 100.000 per person. If you want to see the elephants you need to contact them a week before and they charge another 150.000 per person. They don't want you to explorer the forest on your own

Report Check-In

we did not find the information center at this place. just drive a little bit further to the campement, the chief of the forest lives there with his family and can give you all the information.

we wanted to visit the forest for the elephants but this can not be arranged at the moment, you have to let him know 1week before so that they can do research on where the elephants are at that time. this is not an artificial park but nature so it is unpredictable where the elephants would be.
the chief (Barrè Koivogui) is very friendly. you can contact him on +224 622437443 or +224664492923 or [email protected].

Report Check-In

Permit for visiting the forest, all informations, etc... In the rain season elephants are close to the town, in the dry season you need to walk one day and camp in the forest.
