Something not right?

Description

Switzerland Trail was not accessible during winter without a major off-road snow set-up. The last part of the drive was not maintained and snow was about 18" deep.
Pulled up the map and found this gem. I got in very late and there were many campers already set up, so I tried to minimize my presence and snuck around to site 5. In winter, I think 4x4 is still required, unless you get site 1 which is right when you enter. It's not necessary the rest of the year. I think there are at least 16 sites and I saw a couple RV's and 5th wheels.

Latest Check-Ins

We stayed here for a little over 1 week. Many people got stuck in the snow, luckily I had a winch and recovery gear to get them out. The comment about the mattresses is indeed paranoid. Someone put them there to block that road for whatever reason, probably because it's right at the main entrance and there is too much snow and mud with no opportunity to turn around, and the other fork takes you to the same area. It seemed like a popular area and there was some trash and abandoned gear including a whole pop up camper with a warning notice from the NFS. Also an abandoned tent with 2 sheets of nice foam insulation. Somebody get out there and claim this stuff!

Report Check-In

My boyfriend and I pulled in here around 7-7:30ish on a Saturday in February. It appeared open however
1) There was extremely thick snow and our mercedes sprinter van with a 3" lift and 4wd barely made it.
2) And upon entering we saw 3 mattresses piled up by a campsite with no RV/anything else there. We kept driving and everything was pretty dark and we saw a flashlight being flashed abruptly everywhere in the distant woods until we approached and then it turned off. We couldn't see/hear anyone or anything and we continued driving. We saw a rusty old camper with no car and decided to turn around. Maybe we were being paranoid but it was a little odd. Stay safe out there everyone!

Awesome dispersed campsite. Free. Stayed in early June. Was comfortable. Truck camped in a GMC 1500 with cap, some sketchy clearance moments with some rocks and big trees close to the trail in. Some sketchy moments exiting on the trail out. Stay near the entrance if you have concerns. At the time, remnants of trash, old tents, etc was left at multiple sites. Woke up to a beautiful view. Would 10/10 visit again. ~1hr from RMNP.

Recommend arriving during the day. We arrived late amidst a spring snowstorm with most all sites taken. Roads can be questionable when wet and snowy. Deep washouts on the side of several roads. Stayed for two nights playing it safe as the snow melted. Sets of sites are dispersed in a very large area. So you might be driving a while before you find something. Verizon was 1 or 2 bars at the spot we landed.

Report Check-In

Nice area with designated spots. Road in has dips and washes but manageable. Weak but usable Verizon LTE

Report Check-In

Nice spot. Stayed up at site 1 in my van. Two or three other cars pulled into some of the other sites in the early evening, but otherwise no other visitors.

Fairly windy overnight (enough to rock the van a bit), so might consider other locations if the forecast is calling for high winds.

Weak but usable verizon 4G service.

Tried to find a place here on Friday evening. Should have known better, lol. Looks like this place fills up fast given the proximity to Boulder. I was able to drive though most of it with my RWD Ford Transit. Good cell service

Report Check-In

definitely not the place to stay if you wanna be going in and out of boulder. it's about a 40-45 min drive. this being said, it's only 10 mins from the really cool lil town of Nederland, which is absolutely worth checking out. the campground itself is beautiful, but a bit trashed. there's no facilities and a 14 day limit. I stayed at site 7 and had good cell service. made friends with some people from Nebraska who asked if they could join me at site 7 which is a very large site. lots of dirt bikes and atvs during the day. some people shooting guns nearby too. overall I liked this spot a lot and stayed here 4 days.

15 numbered free dispersed sites. seems to be less likely to be full than magnolia dispersed camping s of nederland which is closer to a complex of mntn bike trails. still it was almost full on a july tuesday. ppl are friendly and may be willing to share. many of the sites are far from eachother and far from the paved road, but the road is accessible to 2wd and low clearance vehicles in summer. amazing wildflower meadows along the loop rd that contains most of the sites (mid july). sites are huge with many flat tent spots. snowy mountain views. only drawbacks are seems to host some homeless drunk types. garbage in tungesten mining holes. biting flies. also pretty far drive from boulder if youre looking to go in and out of town. healthfood coop and regular grocery in Ned and dont miss riding the carousel of happiness. these free dispersed sites fill up faster than kelly dahl the regular campground.

I am camped at site number 4. The road was a little rough getting in but no problem as my tow vehicle is an F-150 pulling an Aliner expedition. At the very beginning around sites 2, 5, & 6 there was a lot of trash beside the road. Camping is only allowed at numbered sites. I will post a picture of the map of campsites. I picked up the trash around my site that would fit into a Walmart bag. I think I got the only open site today, so I did not drive by all the sites. Verizon cell reception was spotty. 105 dB or less of 4g LTE
