The road from Axum to Gonder is very isolated, probably you will be the only traveler on it. It climbs a lot of beautiful mountains. There is no one straight. It's all perfect pavement road, except 40kms between Debark and Zarema, where it's gravel and very narrow. I suggest don't do it during raining season: some rocks can fall on the road and block you. Enjoy it!
Ps only gas station is in Debark, but gas not guarantee anyway

Just to add some info: there are some fuel stations along this road. For sure in Axum (and Adwa) and Shire. The road is in good condition - both the asphalt and gravelroad, not very narrow. Also a lot of trucks and busses going in both directions. Even during a massive hail/thunder/rainstorm, we had no problem going up the switchbacks.
