Description

On the road to the starting point of walking trails (-- sendero's) Los Gatos and Lago Chico and Mirador Douglas Tompkins, here is a parking lot for vehicles with a 2WD. A sigh says that from here onward, only 4x4 cars can continue. The road doesn't get worse, just steeper. However, to get to this parking lot, you need high clearance. We didn't dare risk it with our camper-van and walked up from the campsite. It's an easy walk of just 4 km extra one way (and then a little further to the starting point of the trails).

Coming here was enough for us with our 2WD van! It's not really a parking, just a place under the trees, there is only space for 2 or max 3 to park here. The next 2km to the 4WD parking and quiet steep and sandy full of rocks, you really need a good 4WD to go up to the beginning of the trail!

Definitely need high-clearance to get there ! We have a 4x4 medium/low clearance (Honda CRV) and we could not make it because of the huge car tracks that cannot be bypassed.
Had to reverse then turn around about halfway.
There is a parking lot at the campground, at the entrance of this road.

Do not follow Google maps instructions for this place, but enter through camping Alto Valle and follow the sign towards the senderos of Lago Chico and Los Gatos.

This place is not exactly a parking lot, but there is space for two or maximum three vans below the trees. We arrived around 23:00, passed the camping place and instead, parked here to sleep. It was a very quiet place with no noise at all and no other cars around. The next morning, we wanted to do the sendero of lago Chico. We hadn't paid for the entrance of the park, as we didn't meet any ranger, neither they came to collect money from us, as we didn't park at the camping. So all in all, it was a free visit to the park. After all, the entrance to the park was until very recently for free. Good luck and enjoy, if you do the same! :)

We have a 2wd sprinter with all terrain tires and have made it up some pretty terrible roads in South America so we decided to attempt this. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it up the first big hill past this lot. It’s just too steep and the gravel too loose for a good grip so we had to turn around and come back here. Good luck if you try!
