Nice typical mexican national park with some viewpoints and the trail to the park as the main attraction. There is a map at the entrance of the park, but if you want to do the trail it is best to download a map on Alltrails or Wikilog before going up. You sometimes get cell service along the way, but usually not (or no data).
Entrance fee (not sure if once or per day) is 37 pesos per person.
The park is super pretty and definitely worth a visit. The roads are all doable in 2wd with driving skills (high clearance makes it much nicer). We saw all kinds of cars on the top. Even the road to the campground is doable in 2wd, but has some rough bits (valid as of November 2020, not sure if the winter will affect it).
One issue to consider though is the altitude, we made the mistake to come directly from sea level to the campground at 3600m and got proper altitude sick and needed to drive down at night to get better. Other travelers doing the same trip with us were fine, so it's a bit of luck if you get it our not. It is probably a good idea to sleep in the town at the mountain (1500m) or somewhere up along the way for a night or two to get adjusted if you haven't been in high altitude lately.
Report Check-InThe track up at this current point in time requires 4wd. 2 sections lower down are steep, rutted out with an extremely fine volcanic dust. I stepped out to lock the hubs and went above ankle deep in this ash, felt like I was walking on the moon. The 2nd campsite is stunning and overlooks the summit, looking forward to climbing it tomorrow.
Report Check-InWe stayed inside the park grounds. p30/person. There were three camping areas with shelter. The first one might not be a real camping ground, more of a parking area with bathrooms and sinks, although get the water was turned off when we were there. We needed more water, so hiked down the trail...it's on the same side as the house, between the house and road. A couple of short switchbacks and you'll come across A pipe. If you keep going up the road, there are two more campgrounds on the right. We made the mistake of stopping at the next one, and should have gone further up the road to the third camp ground since you can park flat and access tables more easily. We ended up parking on the side of the road for the night, it was fine. To find the trailhead, keeping going up the road, right at first fork, left at the second. Road was washed out soon after, but short walk to the trailhead. No sign, but it has the feeling of one!
Report Check-InGreat spot. Although a long dirt road, no 4x4 required. Main camp area is a few hundred meters past La Joya. If you continue another few hundred meters past that, there's another very cool and smaller camp spot on the right.
Report Check-InGreat camping spot. Although it's a long dirt road to the main camping spot (~18km) you don't need a 4x4. There's one main area for camping a few hundred meters past La Joya, but if you continue even further past that a few hundred meters on the right there's another smaller area that we had all to ourselves.
