Something not right?

Description

Yes, you can drive up to the crater and camp either in your car about 100m from the top or in a tent at the top. To get to the road, drive PAST the main entrance to the park (about 10-15 minutes) and you'll see a sign that says "Laguna Ipala" on your left. Take that turn and follow the road all the way up. It's about an hour drive. You *do* have to pay 10q per car to park and 10q per person for admission. So worth it! It was beautiful. No wifi, showers, or electricity but there are bathrooms.

I paid 20Q parking 40Q entrance and camping. a bit expensive I think. from 7am to 14pm there is a watermotor that take water from the lake that is incredible noisy. the water was not to clear, because the lake was not full, is the end of dry season. If you have a drone you'll take awesome photos.

Important: be careful with the caws, one of the eat a big bag where I had vegetables and fruits 🤦🏼‍♂️

I rode my motorcycle here and camped for the night in a tent. I can't recommend this place.

The lake is pretty, but it's not spectacular. Not worth going too far out of your way.

It's not isolated and remote as I had pictured. There is a small community up here. Houses, a couple of shops selling sodas and chips. I think you can get breakfast and dinner. You will not have the place to yourself.

The road up, as stated before, is rough. I rode an adventure touring motorcycle here without too much trouble. Just have to go slow and watch for big rocks and ruts.

The camping area is very rocky and uneven. You'll have a tough time finding a flat spot for your tent. There are cattle here too, so you have to watch out for cow crap. You'll park your bike in the lot down by the houses, I paid Q10 for parking. Then carry your gear to the camping area which is up a rocky trail about 200 meters where there is a building to pay the entry fee--I paid Q40 to camp--bathrooms, and a couple shops selling drinks (no alcohol is allowed).

There is a diesel pump which presumably runs all day. It ran all day that I was there; someone turned it off around 8pm. They started it up again at 8am.

In the morning a local came through with his cattle. Other locals came by to fish and swim. It's a busy place and one guy told me it gets really busy on weekends.

Overall, it was not a very pleasant or relaxing experience. I wouldn't come here again.

Road get very rough for last 1.5km, steep sections, deep ruts. Private parking lot is quite level to sleep in the car, we were charged 10q for the night and 10q for the next day. Park entrance is 50m from here, with guards, toilets (bucket flush), entrance fee 10q for foreigner, tent camping inside the park 20q, cabanas 200q. The other written directions are accurate. I drove my overloaded KLR650 Bike up here with 60/40 tyres. If you made it this far on a bike you can make it up this volcano, likely even in a 2wd truck that's not loaded down. Thou i wouldn't want to go in or out if the road was wet.
The lady at the little farm said it 10q to park, I pointed at the sign that say 5q for Moto's, she said that for the day not for the night. Then it was 10q to enter the park. Then I made the mistake of asking how much to camp rather then saying. They looked at each other and said ahh 20q, I argued 10q and asked why it's so expensive for everything. They said that wasn't expensive for me. So I argued some more now that we all knew I was only paying more because"I can afford it" eventually the kid taking the $$$ gave me the "there lieing look" & motioned for me to look at the bill where he was writing 10q. I gave him 10q, thanked him very much, he smiled and I walked to the lake.
Nice place, really pretty and I pitched my tent right by the water.

Please note the turn off is less than ten minutes SOUTH of the main turn off to the park.

45 min steep rough road. 4x4 and clearance is recommended. Road leads to a parking lot near the entrance of the park. You only need to walk 2 min to get to the lake. 10 Quetzales per car to park/camp in or next to your car. Entrance to the park is an additional 10 Quetzales per person. You can camp by the lake. There toilets you can flush with a 'bucket' and a shower stall. There are palapas with tables, benches and BBQ pits.

Here you can free stay at the crater according Travelogue. There should be a 4x4 route give the starts from the southern village of Agua Blanca and about 45 minutes goes. Unsure whether it is also possible during the rainy season. We are not there, but it sounded good.
