March 27th, 2021 cevertam office

We shipped from Cartagena Colombia with Ana Rodriguez and used this agent. We worked with Luis and Claudia. They were fantastic. Everything was very smooth and organized. Boat arrived Wednesday and we had our camper Friday evening. We paid $450 all in for a vehicle weighing less than 5000kg (fees were $100 extra if you weighed more, so be creative on the weight you give, no one checks). On leaving the port you usually have to queue 2-3 hours to exit. This was an unpleasant surprise for us.

March 9th, 2021 La Cevicheria

Very disappointing. The ceviche was very average, not authentic and very very expensive. I don’t recommend. You also get hassled all night by people wanting money and trying to sell you something. I felt a bit like I’d stepped off a cruise ship. Touristy and overpriced.

October 8th, 2020 Parque La Floresta

We’re not usually people to camp in noisy plazas but I really liked this place. It is noisy, but it’s manageable and quietens down after 11pm. It has a really nice feel, both day and night. Nice neighborhood. Surrounded by everything you could need or want.

September 8th, 2020 Mar y Luna

This was our very first night back on the road after 6 months in lockdown due to the Pandemic. Even though they were not officially open (they are an events centre and these are still prohibited) they graciously received us. There was a bit of paper
work to complete related to Covid, but all straightforward. Everyone was wearing masks when they came close to us. The pool was not in service yet due the pandemic.

March 11th, 2020 Another Tatacoa Wildcamp

Really nice place to stay, quiet day and night. Claro 3G and sometimes 4G with download speeds of 2.6GB and upload of 1.7GB

March 10th, 2020 Street Parking behind Hotel Berdez

We decided not to stay in the big parking lot by the gas station as it is noisy with traffic. Behind the hotel there is a little side street and you are protected from road noise by the hotel. We had a quiet night. There is CCTV at the back of the hotel. We used the toilet in the hotel. We had dinner at their restaurant, I would not recommend it, it was one of the worst meals we’ve had in Colombia. There is also a Justo y Bueno in the parking lot and a panadería. OK for one night

March 4th, 2020 Road closed

The road is closed again and they told me it will be 4 months before it’s open again

February 26th, 2020 Ecolavado Jardin

This place is spotless. The owners are really friendly. They have new machines and will wash and dry you clothes. It’s 8,000 per load to wash and the same to dry. The clothes smell clean and lovely and they were returned beautifully folded and organized. One of the best Lavanderia’s of the trip so far. They even delivered them back to our camper at 5pm for 1,000 COP. They will also collect if you call them.

November 19th, 2019 Hotel Morrocoy

Nice clean hotel, good facilities such as wifi, pool (very clean), restaurant. Really good secure parking for any size vehicle. We asked if was possible to camp in their carpark but they said no. You have to get a room. 100,000 without breakfast, 120,000 with.

September 1st, 2019 Pizza Time

Amazing wood fired pizza and delicious craft beer on tap. With toasted cheesecake for desert. Other Italian dishes also available. Not cheap, but definitely worth it.

August 25th, 2019 Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue

We came for one night ended up staying three. We loved it. The place is currently run by a volunteer couple who have been there for 7 months. They were travelling too and “got stuck” there, so watch out!! They are doing a wonderful job. The dogs are happy and well cared for. There were 23 dogs there, including 8 puppies and 2 paraplegic dogs, which I fell in love with. Nothing is expected of you if you stay, but if you want to help out you can. We walked the puppies and I walked the disabled ones. Yes they can walk, well in fact they can run!! They don’t seem to have any idea their back legs don’t work. We paid 10/night and I left a little extra for the dogs.
The area is also breathtakingly beautiful, the most beautiful area we’ve been to in Costa Rica so far.

August 25th, 2019 Ranchos La Isla

Beautiful place to camp right next to the river. We fit in our truck camper. They have toilets, hot shower and wifi now. There are places to have fires and BBQs. We paid 4000 colones pp. very beautiful area. Sadly it was not the right time of year to see quetzals. No cell service at all.

May 30th, 2019 Migración Central

A very, very easy process. It took us 40 minutes and we had our visa. We arrived around 12.30pm and it was quiet, we didn’t queue at all. The place is open 8-5 Mon-Sat.
Follow the instructions below. We needed a copy of the picture page of the passport, a copy of the page with the C4 entry stamp and a copy of the TIP document from the aduana (as we had no proof of a departing flight - you need a copy for each person).
She asked how long I wanted to extend for. I asked 30 days and this was added on the the remaining days I already had left. I got a new stamp for 38 days. So you can renew the visa if you have more than 5 days remaining. I read somewhere you should do it between 5-7 days before expiry.

May 27th, 2019 El Aguila Mofles and Parking

We stayed here 3 nights. Wilbur and his staff were very receptive to having overlanders stay and Wilbur (the owner) would like to have more travellers stay. He told us he has plans to use the lot that he owns next door to expand this idea one day. During the day the guys who work in the muffler shop are there and then late afternoon the overnight guy arrives (Juan, I think). The gates close at 11pm and open at 4am for a bus to leave.
There are no facilities, but there is a tap and hose for water/shower (I’m assuming non potable).
We were only charged 50C/ night by the night guard, which seemed way too cheap so I gave him a tip too.
It was very quiet and safe. I would recommend. There are 3 friendly bunnies there which roam loose and like carrots.

May 24th, 2019 Checkpoint

We were stopped. He seemed very interested in stopping us. He asked for our driving licence and vehicle papers. When he realized we had to open our safe for the vehicle papers he decided the driving license was sufficient. He then asked us for money for a coffee. We have him 20 cordobas. I think he would have liked more.

May 24th, 2019 All Nica Cigar Store

Lovely place to stop. Julio was extremely welcoming and showed us around his cigar box factory and shop. He has lots of interesting stories about his life in Cuba and how he came to end up here. He wanted nothing from us, except to chat and in return offered us a place to stay, toilets, wifi, clean well water to fill our tank and mints. Super nice guy, who has recently lost his wife, but enjoys sharing stories about her and their life together. I would definitely recommend this as a place to stop for the night.

May 7th, 2019 Winners dryclean y lavanderia

It’s expensive $5.50 to wash and $5.50 to dry up to 15lb. But they did do it in 3 hours for us. Just make sure you take a massive load in.

March 29th, 2019 Hotel Las Cumbres - AMAZING!

This is definitely one of the better options to stay in and around Xela. We stayed in a truck camper in the car park. There are no flat spots but we did manage to level it. They are building a new part to the hotel so it was a bit like staying in a building site. It’s expensive 100Q with breakfast or 75Q without. This includes a hour steam which is lovely. Our Can take a Tuk tuk to Zunil and then a bus to Xela

March 29th, 2019 Fuentes Georginas

Definitely not worth the $18usd it cost for 2 people and a car. The pools are touristy, dirty and like warm. If you want to camp its another $17 usd. If you want to go for a nice drive it’s pretty and interesting on the way up. But then turn around and come back down.

March 1st, 2019 Red Bank Cal's Mayan Pride Cafe

We did not stay here or use his guide service but we were told that Raul is not paying the visitors fee for his guests to see the Macaws. I can not confirm this is true. This is a community fee that goes towards protecting their habitat and maintaining the trails. If using his guiding service please make sure he stops by the ticket place and pays the $15BZ per person fee.

March 1st, 2019 Scarlet Macaw Paradise

This place is owned by Celso Sho. He has a sign on the main road through the village that says “Macaws” and another outside his house that says “Macaw tickets sold here”. He said there’s a community cooperative that sells tickets to visit the Macaws. In return they works to preserve their habitat and maintain the trails.
If you wish to contact him ahead of time his details are: [email protected] or tel:661-1365. Their FB page is Scarlet Macaw Paradise.
He offered to guide us or to draw us a map to go on our own. We opted for the self adventure. He charged us $30BZ for two. He also allowed us to camp on his land for the night. There was a water tap where potentially you could fill your tank but I didn’t ask.
The town is a lovely Mayan town and a very nice to spend a night. Best time to see the Macaws is early morning or late afternoon.

February 24th, 2019 Tina's kitchen restaurant

This place is in wrong location - it is located at 16.86042, -88.28277

February 20th, 2019 Jamesville Restaurant

Delicious road side restaurant serving stew chicken/beef, fried fish, rice and beans. BZ$ 8-10. Nice setting next to the river.

February 20th, 2019 Steph’s Comedor and Vince’s moonshine

This was closed. Not sure if permanently or just today

February 17th, 2019 shell gaz station

Great place to fill your tank for free. Water pressure very strong. Tap next to the air

February 16th, 2019 Sarteneja beachfront

Absolutely beautiful spot. We were told you can actually park anywhere along the shore in the town. Very quiet, everyone friendly and welcoming. There a couple of restaurants just down the road and a bar 2 roads back. The toilets over the road were not in a usable condition.

February 13th, 2019 River front

Beautiful little spot next to the lagoon. Very peaceful village. We saw a lady opposite and went over and asked if was OK to stay here. Her and her husband were lovely and said no problem.

February 12th, 2019 Chetumal Walmart

We stayed here one night before we crossed into Belize. Relaxed place. No carpark attendants as other have described. Plenty of space for parking.

February 11th, 2019 Balneario Sindicato Semarnat

Quiet place, stayed for 1 night. 100 x person. 15 minute walk to town

February 10th, 2019 Chamico's

Beautiful bay. We stayed right at the very end on the road once you enter the camping area and literally parked on the beach. It was very windy when we were there. Excellent 4G signal
