Gira Bhakta Check-Ins

August 15th, 2021 Hidden Springs Campground

This place had about 45 spots available on a Sunday night at 7pm when Burlington Campground was full. This place will not accommodate big rigs, because the parking spots are small and the road is bumpy and windy, but we made it fine in our van. We paid $35 -they take cash or check only. The bathroom is very clean with sink and flush toilet. Supposedly there are showers but I am too tired to go take one right now!

August 14th, 2021 Elk Ranch Camp Ground

We paid $39 for a tent site with power and water, but we slept in our van. The RV sites $57. The place was really big and nearly full, but we were able to get a spot on Saturday around 5pm in August. Flush toilets and coin-operated showers are a short hike from the tent sites. $1.50 for 6-minute shower. An Elk herd is in the meadow.

August 12th, 2021 South Neptune overlook

We stayed one night here. There is a Day Use Only sign, but 3 vehicles were parked overnight here on Thursday night including us. The night was pretty quiet; we are slightly removed from the highway. Picnic tables and pit toilet. Great view and access to the beach.

August 8th, 2021 Wilderness outside of Hood River

We stayed in a nice small meadow close to this location, but before the turn-off but we left before I could grab the spot. Very quiet spot surrounded by forest. We passed a few other vehicles parked in other spots in the forest on the way. Most of the road is paved, then turns into dirt road, and then paved again. About 20 minutes drive after turning off of Hwy 35. We had no issues in our Ford Transit Van

August 7th, 2021 Love’s truck stop

Awesome clean shower with a sink and toilet for $13. They give you a towel and wash cloth and the shower has some foam soap dispensers. They have laundry machines too. This was my first truck stop shower and I am afraid I might be spoiled now because it was so clean and nice. They have 5 private shower stalls. We were there on Saturday evening around 7pm and there was no wait.

August 5th, 2021 Phil’s trailhead

Giant parking lot for Phil’s Trails. We stayed here two nights due to very limited options near bend. All hotels and campgrounds were booked. We parked in a turn-off the second night to avoid the road noise. A sign is posted “Day Use Only” but there were at least 6 cars there the first night and at least 10 the second night. No one bothered us. A pit toilet at the trailhead but no trash can that I could find. Please try to keep this one clean and take your trash with you!

July 26th, 2021 Granite Gap

Turn West on County Road 78 from NM80. It looks more like a turnout than a road. The East side is marked as Mcarty Road but West side is not marked. There is a gate that is closed but not locked. Beyond the gate is a gravel road. Continue straight (middle road) about 1/4 mile to another turnout area on the left side. We made this trip in our Ford Transit van with no issues. No other cars parked here on the night we stayed here. Very secluded and peaceful. We heard occasional bovine moos. Nice views of some hills and night sky. I recommend this spot! We enjoyed it!

July 22nd, 2021 Fort Lancaster Scenic Overlook Pic Nic Area

Great location to spend the night while traveling through West Texas. Totally worth the 8 mile detour off I-10. We arrived well after dark with no issues. Road is good and paved the whole way. We did keep eye out for deer because of the warnings in other posts and we did see about 3 deer but they were all on the side of the road. We also saw a bunny but no sheep. We woke up to a marvelous view in the morning! We ate breakfast at one of the picnic tables. There were two other vehicles parked for the night. We went to the fort in the morning which is good if you are very interested in Texas history. They charge $4 per adult at the historic site but you can get in free for veterans or active military.
