August 26th, 2019 BnB in renovated 250 old farmhouse

Beautiful bed and breakfast in a 250 year old former farmhouse. The Maison Catalina at Mas Cambounet has five rooms, all with privat bathroom, most of them newly renovated. A huge garden with large swimming pool, sitting areas, free bicycles, petanque ground, off season BBQ, view over the vineyards and olive groves. Run by two long time world travellers, french, english, german and spanish speaking. Breakfast buffet, wifi and parking even for very big rigs. Many sights nearby., ideal for biking, hiking, canoeing. No pets, no sleeping in your camper possible. Check their website www.MaisonCatalina.fr.

September 8th, 2018 Second Peninsula Provincial Park

So why did you sleep here and encourage other campers to camp in this park when a couple of signs ask you NOT TO CAMP here?

September 3rd, 2018 Pebble beach camp

Quiet camp below a cul-de-sac gravel road. Protected from southerly winds, large area and plenty of space. Not recommended for huge RVs (they can stay a bit further on on a pullout of the gravel road or along the way out here). View of the bay, swimming and fire making at the beach possible (bring your own wood).

September 1st, 2018 beautycamp - whalewatchspot

This is privat land even if there are no signs forbidding to camp

September 1st, 2018 Cabot Trail - Pleasent Bay - TOP

If you camp right at the cliff be aware that this is pretty much used as an outdoor toilet by other travellers. Disgusting...

August 31st, 2018 New Haven Comfort Station

Showers 2.-/15min and laundromat 3.-/load. toilets and water tap as well

August 30th, 2018 Broad Cove Camping

I wasn't able to find this place.

August 30th, 2018 Broad Cove Camping

wrong coordinates... see iOverland entry "Broad Cove Campground" 3 kms further south for exact information.

August 29th, 2018 Remote beach camp

Camping directly at the beach! After driving down the roughish gravel road from the main Hwy., you end at a very long, clean, sandy beach. With a 4x4 you can drive right onto the sand, other cars can put up camp in the woods or on firm ground. Most probabely you will be the only person down here. Perfect sunrise over the sea.

August 26th, 2018 Former military base picnic site

large picnic site from the former military base of Argentia. Tables, shade, non potable water, flush toilets, BBQ place, shelter. It is very convenient spot if you go / come from the ferry, not specially nice, no views, no beach or so but quiet.

August 25th, 2018 Cape St. Mary's Vogelfelsen

Wrong coordinates ?!? At this location is no camping, no boondocking and certainly no "Vogelfelsen" (translated rock of birds). Please take off list.

August 23rd, 2018 Chance Cove Provincial Park

Free camping in provincial park sounds tempting. But what you get at the end of the gravel road is not more than a gravel parking lot where locals park their huge RVs and caravans all year round. You might squeeze in your car between the other campers but you will get as well the full concert of generators and roaring TVs.
The coast (access only on foot) is nice: boulder beach, berries but dirty water.
We had a brief look and hike (be carefull not putting your feet in human faeces...), but quickly turned around and stayed in on of the tranquil roadside bays along the road for a night.
We do not recommend this camp.

August 17th, 2018 Pippy Park

CAD 33.58 for unpowered site. Showers not great but ok for the relatively low camping fee. Tables on sites. Laundry 2.75. Enough road noise to keep you awake...

August 12th, 2018 Beautiful cove (4x4 only)

We saw locals driving up there with their Sedans. So 4x4 and especially high clearance is somewhat relative.

August 12th, 2018 B-36 bomber crash site

This is the starting point for a 1 hr (return) hike to a airplane crash site. It is a steep, moderate to difficult hike thru the woods.
In 1953 a B-36 bomber, one of the largest ever built airplanes, crashed here into the hillside. Unfortunately 23 persons died. These days you can hike thru tousands of debrits from that aluminium plane. Propellers, jet engines, wings and the whole tailpiece of the plane are easily accessible.
Splendid view from up there, picnic tables as well.

If you drive to the very end of the road you will find quiet good wild camping in a former quarry with excellent views over the bay.

Locals drive to both places with their Sedans, but with a large and even a medium sized RV you will have a very hard time to get there.

August 12th, 2018 Isthmus camping at the sea

Plenty of wild camping spots on a grassy isthmus. No houses, no infrastructure around, just water, beaches, grasland and birds.

August 8th, 2018 free showers at a beach

good hot free indoor shower, good swimming, sandy beach, tables, shelters, water, no fire pits, NO OVERNIGHT PARKING

August 7th, 2018 Gravel spot high above the sea

Large gravel area with plenty of level space to camp. Nice view over the bay. Access to the rocky shore possible but difficult. Improvised fire pits, bring your own wood. Some noise from the little traveled highway. You are hardly visible from the highway.

August 3rd, 2018 Twillingate

I wasn't able to find this place.

August 3rd, 2018 Fogo Island - Tilting - TOP

It is umpossible to get to these coordinates with any car, foot access only! The picnic site and table are 140mtrs to the west. At that site you are NOT at the beach, it is hard to get a car in a level position, the firepit is full of rubbish and it is a bit run down. To get here take the so called Farm Rd. from the main highway.
We were rather disappointed and would NOT rate this camp as TOP.

August 3rd, 2018 Dumping and non potable water

water is okay to drink when boilt as locals informed us. We chlorified it and are still alive...!

August 2nd, 2018 Twillingate

wrong coordinates. there is no water andxcertainly no dumping station available in this location.

July 28th, 2018 Outstanding Campground

We usually steer very clear around commercial campgrouds in Newfoundland because mostly you do not get much more than a gravel parking lot like site where your neighbor is just inches away from your vehicle. But not here at OCEAN VIEW PARK:
Get a (unpowered) site right above the beach (small campers only). Sites 6-10 are nicest and close to the facilities. The view on the tranquil bay and the islands is marvelous. These sites have a fire pit, water, a table and bushes seperate the sites. Showers are very clean, common kitchen, more powered sites (unfortunately not half as nice) and walking trail nearby. Good kayaking in the bays. Even more quiet sites are on the eastern beach, ask for those as usually you will be given a site in the western bay.
Unpowered site / tent site is 20.-

July 25th, 2018 Exceptional nice Alexander Murray hiking trail

We put this hike in iOverlander because (in our humble opinion and as mountain lovers) this is the most beautiful hike we did in Newfoundland. A very well maintained trail takes you thru berry loaded forests to a waterfall in a deep canyon and up to a dome like mountain top with 360 degree vista.

We hiked the loop trail in clockwise direction to the top. This way round you have a shorter but steeper and more strenuous ascent. After 45min you will come to a fork and 205 steps lead down to the Corner Brook falls. Do not miss these extra 10 min of hiking as the fall is in a really spectacular, narrow canyon where you can have a nice rest. A further 20 minutes on you are on top of the mountain.
The descent (continuing clockwise) is a bit more difficult as the trail is rougher. But after 20 minutes the trail becomes perfectly maintained again with a lot of wooden steps and boardwalks. It took us only 2:20hrs for the entire hike (+10min for the falls)(hiking time without rest stops). A more unhurriedly pace will take 3:00hrs or more.
Two wooden tent platforms are on the way down. The upper one is in a dense forest, the lower (second) one within smaller trees.

Details:
0:25 trail splits and loop starts, we went left and walked clockwise
0:45 Corner Brook fall
1:05 summit
1:15 tent camp site with table
1:17 pit toilet
1:20 water in brook (difficult access)
1:35 tent camp site with table directly at brook
2:20 back at parking lot

At trail head: shelter, information board, wifi, flush toilets and water tap with well tasting drinking water.
Nature purists should not attempt this hike because they will not love the endless stretches of boardwalks, the many benches and tables and the flights of steps which wind up the mountain sides.

July 24th, 2018 Howley - OK

These coordinates are incorrect or this spot is simply not accessible by car. But the spot described might be 270 meters to the north, just after the bridge on the left side (49.2452 -57.0662). If you do not mind staying 20 meters from the highway this might be an option for a night.

July 22nd, 2018 Gros Morn - Sandy Beach - NICE

A couple of signs and english and french forbit camping here and you are asked to use the nearby campground. Here you are already on National Park ground. The spot described is a sandy pullout 50 meters behind a busy parking lot. It is definitively not a camp at the beach. The beach is 100 meters away!

July 22nd, 2018 water

wrong coordinates. There is only a gravel road at this location

July 21st, 2018 camp well off the highway

A - in parts - rocky gravel road follows the coast for some kilometers. You will find ample camping possibilities, some close to the trees, some on grassy ground, some right at the rocky beach. Very tranquil, inexhaustible fire wood, well away from villages, highway and houses. Access from the Deep Cove Wintering Interpretation Site (signposted 51.2206 -56.7515) or from a turnoff southeast of Anchor Point Village

July 18th, 2018 St. Barbe RV Park

Prices went up to 30.- without power and 40.- with power. Good shower for non residents 7.- This RV park is not much more than a large fenced in parking lot.
