Vagabond Homestead Check-Ins

March 23rd, 2020 Fort Matanzas Overlook Trailhead

Unofficial spot in a nice neighborhood. I would guess you could get kicked out, but we did stay a night just fine

March 21st, 2020 Sam’s Club

Spent a quiet night here with one other van. No issues. Sam's club requires membership so we went to the Walmart in the morning.

March 20th, 2020 Robert K Rees memorial park

Spent a night here, quiet, dark, no problems. We need to be careful not to burn this spot. Don't stay too long, be respectful, don't block the gravel boat launches. Park has beach showers and bathrooms, water fountain. Beautiful spot.

February 28th, 2020 boat ramp by battleship memorial park

Spent a quiet night here, boats showed up in the morning but I didn't hear them. Contestant white noise of traffic, far enough away to not bother us.

Pull into the driveway closer to the bridge, to the east. Other one has large potholes/puddles

October 29th, 2019 Flying J

RVs and cars welcome for overnight. Noise from highway and idling trucks were about normal to any rest area. A Denny’s restaurant is attached to the convenience store with bathrooms available. Didn’t try the showers.

May 27th, 2019 Gunnison river overlook

As described, multiple sites, no neighbors in site this weekend, a few vehicles drove by. Road is rutted but passable with a passenger car. Winds are as described, highly variable and came at the evening through the night for us. Hope to return.

January 25th, 2019 Street parking

Adding a few photos here, note the open spaces and a few campers

January 25th, 2019 Street parking

We found this to be a good site for a few days stay in Santa Cruz. Next to a popular climbing gym, a coffee shop and a brewery. Brewery has bathrooms, climbing gym has showers if you pay for a day. Beach bathrooms and cold outdoor showers down the road.
There are regular parallel parking spots, and then in-between the climbing gym and market spots there were a few pull in spots.
There may be scant parking during the middle of the day, go down to seabright beach and park on the ridge until 10pm. There's a pedestrian bridge to the boardwalk and into downtown.

December 1st, 2018 Sam’s Club parking

Asked manager, he was new and not sure of their policy. Decided to go elsewhere, Walmart across the street has a no overnight sign

November 5th, 2018 Vietnam Mémorial Walk

Stayed just south on SW Elizabeth, before the hotels. Would recommend it, quiet night and in sight of the bathrooms and beach walk

May 22nd, 2018 Joyful Journey Hot Springs

Yup, some nice developed hot springs here. $10 Tuesdays for a soak, but no way I'm paying $50 when there's beautiful free camping nearby. Enjoy!

May 9th, 2018 Public parking in Bisbee

About 5 spots that are not too tilted. Free, just off the main drag of Bisbee. Guests of hotels are sometimes directed here for parking, so odd vehicles not unexpected. We "stealth camped" in what is clearly a camper here for one night. Plenty of public bathrooms nearby.

May 6th, 2018 Fruit / Veggie inspection

Heading north, asked for fruit, said no and despite looking skeptical he waved us on. Military checking passenger bus on the right side.

May 4th, 2018 la concha, sinaloa

yup supposed to not carry fruit, or play dumb

May 4th, 2018 Pemex with subway

Fine to stay for a month. Subway is on Southbound side but easy to make a loop. Subway employees said they did not know the wifi password.
Some employees at night said there were showers, the next day they said go to the other side, but the other side then said no showers. So either my Spanish is awful or we got bad info.
Otherwise fine.

April 18th, 2018 La penita

Stayed three nights, awesome to be right on the beach. No bugs, a half dozen people come to fish every evening and people on horseback enter the beach here. Had one car park and play music, might be worse on a weekend. Very peaceful otherwise, fun swimming but stay alert on those big waves.
Road in is sandy and has a hill, but I saw a passenger vehicle make it. Beach looks very soft and I did not attempt to drive it, ATVs go by though so a lighter 4x4 could attempt it. Oh and bring a trash bag if you can, this area needs help.

April 14th, 2018 Patzcuaro Hotel & RV park

No details, others reported nonexistance

April 13th, 2018 restaurante mingos

Stopped by, the guy who greeted us said sure we could use the restaurant and showers but we shouldn't park out front. Parking spots were not level and very small. I don't recommend trying to go here, just go up the hill a little and park. Plenty of shower and bathroom options in along the beach, enjoyed being free on the streets for a few days here. Very small town, no ATM.

April 13th, 2018 El Palmar de Chacala

Prices seem to be in flux. Was told 230 a night regardless of length of stay. Not flexible, and no explanation for the change. Lot was mostly empty in the low season, and showers and bathrooms are not included, nor is electricity. Not sure what they're on about, we left and parked on the streets just fine.

March 16th, 2018 Casa Estrella Wellness Center

This is a great stop outside of Guanajuato, perhaps 20 minutes by the city bus nearby. This is a hotel that is starting to convert their lower lot into an RV park. While staying you have access to shared areas of the compound including a pool, fire pit, and balcony with kitchen.
This lot is below but several flights of stairs, and WiFi, bathrooms and shower are all available with a walk. Level sites, partial shade. Sewer is forthcoming, electricity was offered but we used our solar. Manager Javier is very friendly and speaks English, I recommend calling that day so they know you're arriving and can unlock the lower gate. Height limit of perhaps 4 meters? They will knock down the arch soon I think. Enter on Camino A Santa Ana, passed the dirt lot you'll see the gates on your right. Plenty secure, we spent three nights here enjoying a break from the road.

March 12th, 2018 Valenciana Parking Lot

Town parking lot, spent one night here before braving Guanajuato. No charge when we came in, store owner nearby said there's a charge during popular times.
Lots of trash, but quiet except for dogs and with a nice view over some ruins.
Bathrooms across the street or in the town center, a few minutes walk.
Happened to be an open WiFi network that worked just fine.
Big rigs could come in here, just be sure to enter the side street from the South heading up hill as it's a tight turn otherwise.

March 11th, 2018 Mario Talavera / Colegio Militar

Street parking. Quiet streets with large walls, mixed residential and business. Stayed here two nights without issue, well lit and right on the edge of town. Driving and parking in San Miguel is both difficult and expensive, take the highway all the way around to this side of town, take a right on Mario Talavera and look for parking, if none then turn right to get to Colegio Militar.
Easier after the afternoons rush hour. If you need to stall for time or scout the area, head to the Fábrica Aurora parking lot and shopping center one block away. Bathrooms and wifi there.

March 6th, 2018 Compañia Cervecera Hércules

The beer and pizza were excellent, the parking not so much.
I introduced myself and explained that I was traveling, and could I park for the night. Employee didn't know, went to ask the boss who said it was fine - then came back a minute later and said actually could we park outside the compound in the driveway. That's fine, they showed us where we needed to pull all the way forward so large trucks could come in the night.
In the morning, the security guard woke us up and asked us to move again, since that area was for employees only. So we moved 3 times, did not get clear advice, and would not recommend this as an overnight location. There is a church nearby with a small square and parking out front, that seems worth a try for a small rig. We parked there for the rest day with no trouble.
Beautiful neighborhood!

February 22nd, 2018 Las Huertas

Cute cabins and two spots for small self-contained vehicles to park. The road down is steep but paved, made it in our RWD dually just fine. Showers were cold but fine, toilets clean and the wifi signal is weak down by the camp spots but fast at the restaurant above.
Cute cabins, some light construction of new buildings going on the property. Stayed two nights, long and steep walk to town but close to the surrealist gardens.

February 21st, 2018 Jardín de Xilitla

Scouted this spot on foot, and found the park is completely torn up and fenced off into the street. As of February 2018 this particular spot is not an option. A word of warning, the whole town is incredibly hilly, busy, and with narrow streets. I recommend parking on the outskirts and walking in!

February 20th, 2018 Cristo del Trampolín

Local guy at the little restaurant recommended parking in a well lit location, which gave us a bit of a concern but the night was peaceful and a beautiful place to wake up. A pack of dogs at the restaurant too, bringing your own would likely result in a barking match. Recommended.
