May 22nd, 2017 AFIP (customs)

Drive To the very end of the path once you have gotten your port entrance authorization. Small white building on the left houses both AFIP and port office where keys will be dropped off. Courteous staff, avoid lunch hour 13h-14h. This is as far as you will drive your rig... 😰

May 1st, 2017 Straight of Magellan whales

This place is permanently closed.

May 1st, 2017 Straight of Magellan whales

Could not find this whale...did it move?! ;)

Why would anyone record something on ioverlander that moves around?

February 18th, 2017 Agrosalta Insurance

We got here during the weekend (Saturday, open until 1pm). Gustavo Uro was very friendly and forthcoming. He mentioned that because of the weekend he was only able to get me 1 month of insurance, at 375 pesos. Taxi to here was indeed 25 pesos still.

February 17th, 2017 Tupiza, Popygas distributor, changing cylinder

If you cannot find a truck driver to take your tank to the plant, or you simply don't want to waste time begging for help; do the following (IFF you have a US tank that is): go in town, buy two propane tank adapters as the Bolivian and US tanks have the exact same thread, buy two hose clamps and 2 meters worth of yellow gas line. Assemble your new tank connector. You should have paid about 70 BOL in all. Now go to Popygas or any distributor, buy THEIR tank (22.5 BOL), and gravity fill from their tank to yours, just keep their tank higher in the air than yours and gas will flow from the high pressure filled tank to your low pressure empty tank. Remember to let out air in your empty tank from time to time (there's a check screw) so the liquid gas can flow. You are done, AND you don't have to beg or waste more time in the future!

January 11th, 2017 Petroperu Gas Station

Were allowed to stay inside the fenced dirt soccer court after asking the guard. Bathrooms, creamery (good ice cream + cheese), restaurant, hotel, and nearby mini grocery stores available.

December 16th, 2016 Gate at NP Lomas de Lachay

We arrived late at night and the guard still wanted full admission price (20 soles pp) for us to camp. However, he allowed us to stay out front in the gravel lot for free. No services. Tons of flies.

December 15th, 2016 Hatun Machay

Pretty rock formations and hieroglyphs by the main cave. This is being spoiled by the local community who is managing the lodge (no electricity, no running water
Toilets don't even have a door) as they want to charge 20 soles pp just to park out front and without offering any services. Furthermore, they charge 8 soles pp to go to the formations. Lastly, the formations are filled with cow pies as the community uses them to grasse. It is all a bit ridiculous as these are open grasslands with no fences. Try to negotiate prices down, it is possible, while making them understand that they are shooting themselves in the foot.

December 4th, 2016 Pueblo De Los Muertos Trailhead/Parking

Hike takes about 2 hours round trip. Do take the keys from the tourist info center in Lamud (8 soles pp) otherwise you may not be able to a) drive to the trailhead and b) get to the ruins after the hike down. Beautiful vistas all around. Flat enough to camp at trailhead, no facilities, however you do get decent cellphone coverage (Claro's)

November 30th, 2016 Swiss Wassi Zorritos

All the prior posts are true--in addition, can surf right in front of property at peak of high tide. Great place and highly recommended.

November 25th, 2016 Austrogas

Paid $1 per kilo. Had to wait ~1 hour to get my bottle back, unsure as to why as everyone was very kind as attentive. Did not have to deal with any tanker truck as the prior post mentioned-the bottle was filled directly at the pump.

November 10th, 2016 Quesera El Salinerito

Great place, wifi password still correct

November 7th, 2016 Eni/AgipGas

It is open, yet they take their sweet time filling up the tank (~45min). 8 USD

October 30th, 2016 Santa Rosa Sports Complex

Flat, big rig friendly, water, FREE WI-FI, and the occasional futbol/volleyball pickup game if you are into that. Lights are out at 11pm, fairly quiet.

October 23rd, 2016 Free parking lot, guarded at night

Spacious lot. Noisy at night however. It is guarded and free. No services. Right next to free zoo/rescue center. WIFI signals do not work.

October 8th, 2016 Mecanizar

Very friendly, well staffed and equipped shop. Speak to Wilmar

September 30th, 2016 ElectroGas Armenia

Rules changed, they are supposedly refusing to fill up unmarked (local markings that they have for their bottles) bottles, I.e foreign bottles. Go another 300 yards and on the left ask they guys at the charcoal/coal place ad they will hose charge it.

September 30th, 2016 Carbon/charcoal Place Right Next To Colgas

28k for a 20lb tank. The guy has a hose that will transfer from a cilinder to another. Very kind

September 30th, 2016 Fragua De Angelito

A forge where you can get your leafsprings reshaped/replaced. Can park safely off the street in enclosed parking lot.

September 18th, 2016 EcoGlampling

Owners Andres, Marcela, and William are carving out an Overlanding Paradise in the outskirts of Los Nevados National Park. The site is right in the heart of El Eje Cafetero and 2kms from Santa Rosa Del Cabal hotsprings. It is bordered by two cool water creeks and covered in lush mountain vegetation. The ecoglamping site will have space for rigs, tents, hot/cold water pools, and a bar/restaurant. You will not want to bypass this mountain retreat! At the time of this post, the construction of the camp was scheduled for October and ready to receive overlanders in December.

September 9th, 2016 DIAN (Customs)

Place to come if you need to extend your temporary importation permit. We were given 90 days but spent 30 days in Venezuela (crossed through Cucuta), leaving the vehicle in Colombia. They needed to verify the original importation permit issued in Santa Marta, so tons of phone calls back and forth. If you have questions about the process, feel free to contact us via bkexplore (Instagram or Facebook)

August 5th, 2016 Laguna De Salado

Drive on a grave/dirt road for 3kms off of hwy55. When you get to the green gate it is/was unlocked. From there it's 300 mts to a stunning high altitude lake, a waterfall as a backdrop, and wild trout fishing! (Caught small to medium sized Rainbows). Plenty of open flat spaces to camp/boondock. There is another lake above the waterfall called Tambor. Very quiet, no one around. Seems like the place was a failed tourism venture given the two empty houses.

August 4th, 2016 Gorgeous Waterfall Engulfed In The Mountains

Come see's free and visible from the well maintained gravel road. You can hike to the fall as well.

August 3rd, 2016 Rural School Parking Lot

It's a 20min drive from the main hwy55. Spot has no amenities other than a great view of the unfolding valley below. Very quiet. School gets out early so it's a comfortable spot to spend the night and continue on the next morning.

July 31st, 2016 Hotel de Normandie

Wonderful host. Seasoned traveler. Will do anything to make you feel comfortable and at home. Pet friendly!

July 28th, 2016 San Gil Plaza

Haggle a price to stay overnight in the rear parking lot. We got it for COB 20,000. Park by the house, right next to the edge of the lot and you will find several electric outlets. Water spigots can be found at the front of the mall, by the hfghway, and down the ramp that takes you from the highway to the rear parking lot. Mall is dog friendly, movies are cheap, inexpensive supermarket, and several of the restaurants have wifi. Cafetto Plaza's wifi password is esperanza2016 ;) bathrooms are opened until 9pm but if you are nice to the guard he'll open them.

July 11th, 2016 Agua Nevada

4,000 COB to refill the 20 liter jug.

March 27th, 2016 Volcan de Agua

3,722 mts above sea level, allows you to see Antigua and the coastline. It has almost the "perfect" volcano shape.

February 29th, 2016 Taxhido Hot Springs - NICE, $60MX per car

Not Free anymore but close to it $50 pesos per car.

February 29th, 2016 gas Express

$7.92 per liter
