June 20th, 2021 Local food

Very local place with the meat hanging right there. 10,000 for a huge plate of meat and what tasted like mash potato, I’ve had worse in fancy restaurants

June 18th, 2021 Rolex restaurant

Local place, simple food, good English. 10,000 for eggs and potatoes with a coke.

June 18th, 2021 Mutukula Border OSBP

TZ-UG: As mentioned, no need for a PCR test. Keep driving straight until you can’t drive any further, park at the side of that gate. Walk through the small man gate on the left, the small building there is customs. Try not to speak to anyone with a name tag hanging around their neck, they don’t work there, they’ll try and scam you. After walking through the gate the testing tent is over on your right, the first guy on the left is who you pay $50 equivalent in shillings to, you no longer have to go to the bank for this, if you don’t have UGX there’s a couple of exchange places straight ahead of the gate that you walked through. Once you’ve done your test, start with all the rest, u have 2hrs to kill, go back to that customs by the gate and give them copy of tip, there’s a place behind there that will copy if need be. Walk to the one stop area, it’s over to the left of the testing tent, there’s UG customs opposite immigration, give them copies of registration and they will give you 90 days TIP (think this is where I paid $60 road tax), take that to customs by the gate again, then u should be able to drive through, they’ll check the vehicle inside and out. Park about half way through. Wait for covid results (can probably get stamped out of TZ), they msg u on WhatsApp when they’re ready. Take results to immigration, pay $50 visa. Drive out and they check your vehicle over again at the next gate.

June 17th, 2021 Palm Heights Hotel

Nice place, friendly staff. They wanted 50,000 for camping and 60,000 for the cheapest room. Negotiated and got the room for 50,000. Ensuite, nice little patio. Breakfast included

June 16th, 2021 Watermelon hotel

Came here looking for food and ended up staying as the rooms were nice and 20,000 for me on my own. Basic food, not a bad bar area. Proper toilet, fan, mozzy net. For 30,000 you can get A/C

June 16th, 2021 Hilltop hotel

Rooms for a single person starting from 20,000, 35,000 for ensuite, they do allow camping here, just not sure on the price. Really nice location overlooking town and the lake, beautiful buildings, looks kind of fancy and thought it’d be out of my budget. The staff were nice and friendly with a little bit of English. Ate a big tasty meal of chicken stew with rice for 10,000. Price includes a simple breakfast

June 6th, 2021 Amazing viewpoint

This viewpoint is further up and is even better than the other one I think. You do have to pay 10,000 though, but try and negotiate, it’s so worth it

June 6th, 2021 Paradise eco farm

Spectacular view!! 4WD access only, a bit slippery in the wet, so take care. They have 4 rooms, own kitchen for cooking and pizza oven. Double room B&B $60 , but that’s negotiable in the low season

June 4th, 2021 Britam Insurance + COMESA

Sanlam will also sell you comesa here, $37 for 3 months. Jubilee is in the same building as well, I think the other location on the map for it is wrong.

June 4th, 2021 CMC

Dealership workshop for a few brands, Land Rover, Ford, Iveco etc. They do good work and very professional, but expensive of course

June 4th, 2021 Crafty Dee’s

Surprisingly good craft beer, also the food is great. Looks quite new

May 23rd, 2021 Corrupt police speed checkpoint

Still the same. The town they photograph you from is so far back you can’t remember what speed you were doing. They were pulling locals over at this one as well, but they probably make it look like tourists were speeding even if they weren’t. 30,000 fine with a receipt

May 23rd, 2021 Corrupt Police speed trap

These guys are still trying the same thing. I did exactly as the last guy said and told them they were famous. 5mins of arguing, didn’t pay anything

May 22nd, 2021 Great view bush camp

There were a couple of guys at the tower when I drove past, I think someone must stay there permanently by the look of it. One came out to talk to me, very friendly. Used sign language to ask if it’s ok to sleep down in the trees and he said yes. There was a bit of a barrier up on one access, so I went along a rougher road that’s a little further up to get in

May 21st, 2021 Mikomo Beach Lodge

$10pppn camping. Beautiful spot with a nice pool

March 12th, 2020 Mother Elizabeth

This is in the wrong location, it’s a fair way further up the road. 3,500pp for a chalet. No running water or electricity, they give you a big bucket of water to use. Beds are comfortable and the people here are lovely

March 8th, 2020 A1 restaurant

Great Indian in Mzuzu, 4,500 for butter chicken, other meals similar prices. Very tasty and great for a change!

March 5th, 2020 Macondo Camp

Nothing really to add as everyone else has covered things. One of the best camps we’ve stayed at, the sheltered picnic tables in the camping area are amazing for the rainy days. Great restaurant, nice staff and the owners are lovely

March 4th, 2020 Soul kitchen

Nice local place with western food as well. Friendly staff and tasty food. Chips and fried chicken 2,000, T-bone with chips 3,500, rice beef stew 1,700. We found it good value

March 1st, 2020 Ngala Beach

Beautiful campground, we stayed a few extra days because we loved it so much. Owners are super nice, English-Zimbabwean couple. Really feels like you’re staying at a fancy resort. Pool and bar area have an amazing view and staff are great

February 28th, 2020 Cool Runnings

Tried to go here, was closed. Went to steps but they wanted 7,000pp and definitely wasn’t worth it by the looks. Ended up staying in a lodge with secure parking back in town for 6,000 for a double room with bathroom

February 27th, 2020 Nanchengwa Lodge

They wanted 7,500pp, we said we’d stay for 2 nights if they made it 3,500pp, but they wouldn’t budge. We moved on, way over priced for what you get. We kept driving up to Mufasa and slept directly on the lake for 3,500pp

February 21st, 2020 Bridge from Rio Save

We were driving north, they told us we had to pay a toll to cross the bridge, 25 Metical. They had a document (see photo) with the prices and everything. We thought it was dodgy so we tried to argue for some time, we speak Spanish so could comunícate ok with them, in the end we paid and decided it was legit. On the paper they gave us it said you only pay driving north, but from March you start paying the same driving south. No other problems, guy on the other side asked for a soft drink. Cheap, but we hate corruption, so really tried hard to make sure it was real

February 20th, 2020 Next to a abandoned campground

Spent two nights here. We turned right once we hit the bay and camped on the northern side of the abandoned camp ground, under a huge tree that kept the temperature down. Absolutely beautiful area, a lot of rubbish around though. Need to buy permit in town to drive here, not sure how likely it is that someone will check for the permit, but it’s 1,000 Metical

February 17th, 2020 Johan and Quilandia Airbnb

We stayed a few days at this amazing house owned by a German-Mozambique couple. The house is beautiful with 3 rooms, 2 have aircon, the third is upstairs and gets plenty of breeze. It has a really nice garden out the back with a big pool and bbq area. The couple are lovely! It’s a few streets back from the beach but is FAR cheaper than the places right on the beach, still only a short walk to the beach and some good restaurants. Johan WhatsApp : +4915777219108

February 14th, 2020 Natural rock pool

Beautiful tidal rock pool on the point, truely amazing! Park below the old hotel and walk through and down to the other side, beautiful views from the old hotel as well. Ok to wild camp on the beach near the parking so we were told

February 14th, 2020 Pomene Wild Camp

We stayed here a couple of nights and had no problems. Cruise ship comes in every Wednesday, we arrived as one was leaving. We were told up to 3,000 people at once come ashore further up towards the point to a beautiful area with a pool, bar and things. Only open when there’s a ship there though. We went and watched the sunset there which was really nice

February 12th, 2020 Lighthouse bushcamp

One of our favourite wild camping spots so far. Great view and you don’t get many locals coming by to try and sell you their things. Spoke to the lighthouse keeper and his friend when we arrived, they were very nice. 3 well behaved dogs followed us back from the beach and became our unofficial guard dogs for two days, if any locals came anywhere near us they’d get really aggressive towards them, was nice to have them their through the night

February 6th, 2020 Crabs beach

Great spot right by the beach and away from town. Easy to get to, no deep sand, no need for 4WD or high clearance, some locals have driven past in small cars. Quiet road, but the site is right beside it. Vodacom 3G on the beach

February 4th, 2020 Before Paul Kruger gate

Spent a quiet night here very close to the gate, feels safe as the guard is there all night. We asked if it would be ok first and they told us it would be fine. Only recommend it here if you plan on going into the park very early, because you won’t get much sleep or privacy once all the cars start coming past
