Disfrute La Naturaleza Check-Ins

December 21st, 2017 Quarry Microondas San Francisco

The dirt road to the Microondas San Francisco is a bird spot where you can easily see the Black-chested Sparrow.
But it's also a nice walk along the dry forest there.
We stopped at the quarry because the road is very bumpy and is better suitable with a 4x4 afterwards.
Sleeping here is fairly quiet. You barely hear the main road under. It's also safe because private security from the mine above watch the area.
Acess to the dirt road is at km145 of MEX80 north of Autlan.

Such lovely people !
Gina and Girardo welcome you warmly to their home. As overlanders, you have so much to share with them and their 3years old son Matias is lovely.
Spanish speaking is better but they also speak good english.
We parked our van in their street. Quiet at night.
You have access to great bathroom with hot shower, Wifi and washing machine.

December 3rd, 2017 Parking after La Joya - Nevado de Colima

Side of the road at the begining of the trail to the summit of Nevado de Colima at 3438m abvove sea level. Take the dirt road the goes down to La Joya and go almost to the end.
The dirt road to the park is very bumpy and dusty. High clearance is very recommanded. We touched the back of the van twice on the way up.
Park entry : 32ppp
If you really want to hike the Nevado de Colima but can't go with your vehicule, Girardo in Ciudad Guzman organizes guided tours and you can park in his street. Contact at : [email protected]

November 21st, 2017 Piedra Herrada (Mariposas Monarca Sanctuario)

Now parking during the day is 15pesos/day.
We slept for free the first night. But the second night, the night guard requested 100pesos just for parking for the night. We slept in front of the closed parking lot for free.
Normally you must pay for a guide. But if you leave early, you can manage to do without.
We made the mistake of following the main track with explanary signs. There aren't ANY butterflies there (right now at the end of november 2017). The 100 trees full of butterflies are on the right. When you follow the paved trail at the beginning, there are two circular resting areas. On the second one, don't follow the large main trail, take the tiny one that climbs on the right hand side. When you reach another large trail, go to the right under the "Precocion" yellow band and follow the tracks. The end of the climb is steep.

November 3rd, 2017 Campamento Tortuguero

As said in the tourist attraction comment, this is a conservation center for turtles, mainly tortuga golfina.
We came here and stayed a week. The staff is very friendly and you're allowed to camp for free on the campamento in exchange of a little help. Toilets, cold shower, water at the tape. One can also plug onto the electricity.
We were there at the end of october. The biggest activity is between august and september where you can find over 100 nests during the night. Help is needed and more than welcomed.
Early in the morning and during the day, you can help collect the new born baby turtles and then release them to the ocean. Sometimes we collected over 5000 baby turtles in one morning !
Patrols are at 9PM or 3AM, depending on the time of the year. Even though it was late in the season, we saw turtles nesting on the beach during the night.
Great experience ! Great people !
Make sure you've got all the food necessary, there isn't much in Puerto Arista and you might want to stay more than planed.

Better go to the only cyber in town which is fast for 15pesos/h.

October 24th, 2017 Refugio del Quetzal

No quetzal when we came but we've had no luke with this bird so far (;)). Apparently the best period of time is from january to june when it's nesting.
