awesome spot if you have the $15 (1 x van, 1 person) to spare. super clean, gated and secure, nice wake up views over the river. uncomplicated owner. they only have two spots, so just give mike a quick call. +50687070296

April 18th, 2021 Free Recreation Site , Frog Falls

when you get to the rec site sign, keep driving up and follow the left path up you get straight to the falls. there are two sites with fire rings.
you can access some water from the creek there and sleep to the sound of the water falls

August 31st, 2020 Jackson River

access road to the Jackson Bay River. nice spot on the water.
could hear kiwis at dusk.
sand flies as can be expected.

July 31st, 2020 Waikawa freedom Camp

classic freedom camp spot! has toilet facilities close by.
not too big, space for about 6 campers. very quiet and serene.

September 19th, 2019 Perfect tent spot beside stream

not sure, what was meant with prior entry. we couldn't find a spot to get in with our van, so maybe just for tents and hike in?

September 19th, 2019 Corteza Amarillo

this place is different from Essence Arenal!
it's an old staples property that can be "rented" for the night from Majestic properties down the hill. We didn't stay as we were already up the hill, but it looked super nice with great views on vulcano arenal. not sure about facilities, would need to ask at Majestics, but would probably turn out cheaper than Essence Arenal next door (which is awesome also btw).
follow Majestics Property sign on the bottom of the hill.

September 19th, 2019 Huge plain field

still a field, but very muddy. decided not to go in as we were worried to get stuck in the water puddles. has some concrete fencing with a small opening, but anyways for big rigs it could be problematic to enter even if dry.

September 12th, 2019 Heladería La Parada

mariano and flavia are so friendly! we stayed in the grounds next to La Parada the restaurant/ice cream buses. good food, awesome ice cream and the owners were so welcoming. Highly recommended, even go out of your way to visit. they love overlanders and have some awesome stories. great people. ask to try thier wine

September 11th, 2019 Natural Bridge from Fiscustree

we could not find the path down unfortunately

September 8th, 2019 Playa Minas

awesome spot. the drive in is a bit bumpy, but we made it with 2wd, high clearance probably a good thing to have.
nice snorkling and swimming. no waves here, but veeeeery clear water.
no phone reception.

September 5th, 2019 Marbella Beach

spend a great night here on the beach, with open doors. felt pretty safe. just make sure you lock up fully when going for a surf.
wifi still the same and the shower behind the tiki bar an added value.
nice spot for a sunset surf with not too many people (compared to busy tamarindo). road in. is a pretty long dirt track, but in good shape.

September 2nd, 2019 Playa Grande

we gave it a shot and were fine camping here. i guess it's a hit or miss here and as mentioned b4 depends on the turtles also. police came by around 9:30 pm to check on us and reminded us to not flash lights at the beach bcs of the turtles, to be careful with our belongings and take care of our rubbish. really nice spot with good high tide surf.

August 30th, 2019 checkpoint

we didnt go all the way here, but were told by our host in playa coco, that some travellers had been turned around recently.

August 29th, 2019 Playa Maderas

top spot right on the beach with awesome surf.
stayed inbetween the bars, as better wifi reception from studio cafe (get some beers with them and they give you the password) when we were there Josue030123.
locals are super welcoming and if you have drinks or food everynow and then, they will let you use their toilets (otherwise C20 at tres hermanos to the left).

August 25th, 2019 Playa El Remanso

stayed here as the waves were a bit more forgiving in a big swell. parked between the two bars and were very welcome by everybody. bar on the left has wifi, but they just connect u (dont give u the pswrd). works well though. we were later told, that they had left the bathroom open for us at night if we wanted. :) nice vibe and alright prices for food and drinks.

August 16th, 2019 Choco Cafe Museo

no more buffet or breakfast in general :(
still workshops and chocolate drinks etc.

August 14th, 2019 nice parqueo by the beach

great spot on the beach. we went to the comedor down the road to ask about parking and the owner went to clean it up first, so we had space. still C50/night per vehicle.
right in the middle of the two surf spots and close to bars and restaurants. wifi from next door does not really reach though and there is ur regular central american rubbish, but it's a super convenient spot in a nice location

August 13th, 2019 Mano a Mano

didn't stay here, but had food and drinks and it's a super sweet place. great chill ambiance and nice people. Dorm beds are $9 and they rent surfboards, offer classes and yoga.

August 12th, 2019 Money xchange - Mega Boutique

in the store ask at cashier for $-Cordoba cambio. best rates ever

August 12th, 2019 AutoMAX - ask at Hotel Mapy

asked at Mapy Hotel for parking and were referred to this spot (same owner). Paid C100 per night per vehicle incl. fast Wifi. there are electric plugs that work and some taps with running water. a quite ironic toilet in a hidden corner for emergencies also (we could have added the use of hotel bathrooms for an extra C50).
nothing beautiful, but very practical and safe, close to parque central, post office, laundry.

August 12th, 2019 Apart Hotel Mapy/Informal Campground

we went to ask fornobwrnight parking and when the staff asked the owner he referred us to the next door AutoMax, which is also his, for C100 for the night per vehicle (incl. Wifi). vould habe added use of bathrooms in hotel for another C50.

August 11th, 2019 Parqueo Cañon de Somoto

it's a really cool spot for $5/vehicle per night. pit toilet and bucket water available. the family is super nice and the mum cooked us an awesome meal for a good price and got some beers just for us. not super level, but alright.

August 11th, 2019 Somoto Canyon

we did the medium trip by ourselves without guide. if u can swim and have a medium level of fitness, it's easy.
walk back to the main road and turn right until you see the "National Monument sign". turn right onto the dirty road here.
first fork, take a right, second fork take a lwft and then follow the path until u get to the river.from here follow the river (rock hopping, swim, jumping). the last bit you could take a boat for a fee or just swim. short walk back to the starting point.
life jackets are in our opinion not needed (depending on your swimming skills and fitness of course), there is spots to take breaks and stuff.
cool half day activity!

August 10th, 2019 El Amatillo, El Salvador to El Amatillo, Honduras

just a note: we could not pay in US$ and had to exchange to Lempiras (L80 for passport stamp & L920 for TIP). TIP can be paid at and bank also, but they only open at 9am (we were there at 6am), cash was ok though.

August 9th, 2019 Cholos Place

Bladimir, the owner, rents out a few rooms (not sure the price), but you can also camp in front on a grassy bit right at the beach ($5/vehicle/night). outdoor shower, no toilets except in the rooms, but the last restaurant on the right side of the beach has a toilet for $0.25 or if u have some beers and food, they let you use it for free at any time thereafter (always offer to pay out of courtesy).
views onto the surf break, hammocks for use and pretty good wifi as well as electric plugs to use if u have an extension cord. occasionally bread, ice cream, veggie, pizza and chicken trucks pass by, but u can also walk at low tide on the beach to el cuco to get basic groceries.

July 31st, 2019 Parqueo (accesso a la playa)

this is a simple and clean parqueo at the beach front of playa san blas, in front of the local break. a couple of trees for shade and some goats and pigs to keep you company;)
price:$2 per night per vehicle

there is a nice pupuseria and a licuados shop close by, as well as a few beachside eateries (open on weekends, but close early during the week days). No groceries available or market, so come prepared with food if u want to cook.
surf school and rental also available at "Surf Strong" around the corner or via the adjacent beach shack.

July 29th, 2019 Parking in front of the police station (blue PS2 sign)

see photo for wifi from bar next door. it is not very fast but works for messenger and email.
