January 1st, 2012 Hostal Terra

500m from the airport, next to the main road. Sorrounded by high walls and gates.

Take the black gate on the right. We torned down the alarm wire from the wall completely when driving through the left gate!

$ 15 is the price for a double room. Therefore, one should insist on getting his own room key. Very clean bathroom with hot shower and even soap and towels. Free WIFI.

January 1st, 2012 Termas Jamanco,

Camping in the parking lot in front of the hot springs. When visiting the hot springs the night in the parking lot is free. Admission: US $ 3 / person. There are several natural and very well maintained hot water pools in a beautiful developted gardens. Open from 6am til 8pm. Thereafter, the gate to the parking lot is locked.

Alternatively, you could also camp at the Termas Papallacta. There camping is US $ 6 / person and the admission to the spa US $ 7.50. We also had a look at the thermal hot springs, but thought the Termas Jamanco are as beautiful and were cheaper including admission at Termas Jamanco 21 US!

January 1st, 2012 Aqua Center Sinchi Misahualli

This small jungle lodge is run by a local women Cooperative. Clean toilet and cold water shower. Very clean area. Short trail, observation tower, restaurant and museum. Very nice and helpful staff. Unfortunately it was raining too strong during our stay so couldn't make use of the services of the lodge. We stayed there on Saturday and there was a very loud event with live music and DJs from 11pm til 6am in the morning going on.

January 1st, 2012 Finca Chamanapamba Regines Café Aleman

A designer dream based on Hundertwasser and Gaudi? made true by the two Germans Regine and Dietrich. Stunning property with a small gem hotel and restaurant. We had coffee and dinner there and were therefore allowed to stay in the parking lot. Clean toilets and hot water jungle shower. Short trail to the waterfall Chamanapamba.

January 1st, 2012 Backpacker Great Hostel

Very relaxed hostel with parking in the backyard. Clean toilet and cold shower. Guest kitchen. Beautiful lounge with pool table, TV, sofas, DVDs. Free WIFI. Opportunity to do laundry. Cute Argentinian owners. Very narrow doorway (Caution: the cabin tilts up because the driveway is wrong).

Right in the center and at the baths "Baños de la Virgen". Starting point for great hikes in the mountains of Baños. Excellent multigrain bread is available in the cafeteria Rico Pan at the corner of Ambato and Maldonado.

(Including breakfast: bread, jam, oatmeal, juice, coffee)

January 1st, 2012 Visitor Center Chimborazo

Both the entry as well as camping in the park are free. Clean toilets. We camped behind the entrance to the parking lot. At night the temperature dropped to 0? C.

Coming from the north, you can easily break altitude records here. Highest camping spot: 4,400 m / Highest drive with the car (very easy, even for large RV's): 4.800 m / Highest hike (gentle trail to the next Refugio): 5,000 m.

After the visitor center turn right on the main street. Once it meets again with the E50, go straight onto the gravel road to the cheese village of Salinas. Stunningly beautiful track!

January 1st, 2012 Side street in the city center

We didn't find anything suitable for the night, and finally parked on a road in a slightly better looking residential area. Quiet night.

Caution: Alausi is built on a hillside and therefore has narrow and partially brutally steep roads.

January 1st, 2012 Laguna Llaviucu, P.N. Cajas

Parking lot behind the gate. Clean toilets. Quiet night. This part of the park is already closed at 4.30pm. We received very good information material about the park and the local birdlife.

Fantastic hikes around the lagoon Llaviucu and the valley possible.

(4 US $ / person)

January 1st, 2012 Refugio Laguna Toreadora, P.N. Cajas

Camping at the visitor center. Clean toilets (only open during the day), museum, restaurant. In the middle of the mountains of Páramo.

Probably the most beautiful Paramo trail starts at the visitor center (no. 1 on the map). Also a nice, short hike goes around the lagoon Toreadora.

(Also originally $ 4 / person, but you have to camp us on the weekend without pay leave)

January 1st, 2012 Former campground of Petrohué

We spent the night (chil 10,000. Pesos) on the large parking lot in front of the official campground. However, we had prior approval from the park rangers that this was not a problem. Clean toilets (300 chil. Pesos) there is a jetty Petrohué.

From the car park / campground starts a very nice trail along the lake and up the lava field of the volcano. The tour of the Saltos de Petrohué is quite nice, but the entrance (1,500 chil. Pesos / person) and the parking fee (270 chil. Pesos / 20 min.) are not really worth it.

January 1st, 2012 Camping Municipal

Shady sites under large trees. Rustic bench / table combinations with grills. Due to off season we were all alone. New and very clean bathrooms with hot showers for which we gladly paid extra.

(10 arg. Peso / person, 20 arg. Peso / Car and 7 arg. Peso / person for showers)

January 1st, 2012 In den Dünen

Small gravel roads leave the Panamericana regulary to the left towards the power poles. We followed one of these roads and pulled out between two sand dunes.

Back on the Panam after a short time you can take a shortcut to the ruins of Tucume (S 79.84776 6.51285 W), which give you a good Idea of the rural life in the deserts of North Peru.

January 1st, 2012 Camping La Gruta

Within walking distance to the lake and central Fruttillar Bajo. grassy field with covered tables and benches. Simple, but clean toilets and hot showers (special hours).

January 1st, 2012 Yuraccorral camping

Awesome camping at the end of the laguna in the National Park. No facilities. Park admission fee of 5 Soles / person.

One of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world starts from here via the pass of Portachuelo (4,737 m) on the east side of the Cordillera Blanca and then to San Luis and Punta Olimpica (4,890 m) back on the west side. If you drive clockwise you can avoid most of the truck traffic. The gravel road via the first pass is mostly just one lane, the road via the second pass is in excellent condition except for the last bit where the new tunnel is built. As long as the tunnel is not yet open you can do this part only with a four wheel drive and low gear. The entire route is amazing: magnificent views, thrill, adrenaline!

January 1st, 2012 Camping Petunia

Camping with very small and - because of the large trees - very dark sites. Clean toilets, hot showers, (very slow) Free WIFI. There are two washing machines for self laundry and for 20. Peso / filling. Beautiful sandy beach at the lake.

(40 arg. Peso / person, 25 arg. Peso / car)

In the parking lot just above the laguna with views on the volcano Lincancabur.

There is no way to dispose garbage on the whole laguna route. Garbage has to be brought to the Chilean Border

January 1st, 2012 Area Natural Protegida Epu Lauquen

A beautiful campground which is charmingly integrated into the forest at the shore. The sites are big enough to have a fantastic view of the turquoise lagoon and they are all equipped with benches, a table and a fire pit. The camping area has a small shop where you can buy firewood. There are several pit toilets in the area and a bathroom with two flush toilets and two showers (On weekends additional charges).

From the campground you can do a two-hour hike to the waterfall Chaquiras.

January 1st, 2012 Playa Roja Reserva National de Paracas

Camping in Lagunillas right next to the Playa Roja. Quiet at night, but very windy. Toilet in the Visitor Center or - better - in the museum near the entrance.

Boat trip from Paracas to the Islas Ballestas. Great trip to the seals, penguins, seabirds and the desert painting "Candelabra"! Duration: two hours. Since all tours are made with the same type of boat you can take the best offer (35 Soles / person + 5 Soles park admission + 1 Sol administration fee. Caution: The street vendors take up to 70 Soles for the identical tour. Best to visit one of the many tour agencies in the city.) Best to sit on the left side in the boat.

(Admission is 10 soles / person and allows camping for three consecutive days. We stayed two days in the park.)

January 1st, 2012 Camping Goye

Run down campground. Many benches, tables and grills are broken. The toilets and hot showers are very rustic. We realised only later that there are two other, better-looking campgrounds in the Colonia Suiza. However, we don't know the prices.

(30 arg. Peso / person)

Quiet campsite in the parking lot of the (very worthwhile) archeological site. As the parking lot is located in the archelogical site you have to pay the admission fee of 10 soles / person.

January 1st, 2012 Cabañas Yanuncay

The camping area is a romantic mixture of a farm, a park and a dump with also cabanas on big grassy fields with trees. Beautiful bathrooms with hot showers in one of the cabanas (if they are not rented). Fresh and waste water. Free WIFI. Too expensive - a fair price for Camping would be US $ 10.

In 30 minutes you can walk to the historic center of Cuenca. The Lavandaria Arco Iris is a 600 meters walk from the campsite (S 79.02529 2.90359 W).

(Originally $ 15 / day, but after hearing 25 US $ / 2 days)

January 1st, 2012 Hosteria Izhcayluma

Wonderful garden area with cabanas, pool area and restaurant above Vilcabamba. Under German management. We camped in the upper parking lot because the RV parking at the road could not be used due to road work. A bit noisy because of all the taxis in the evening. Beautiful bathrooms with hot showers. Laundry service. Free WIFI.

At the reception there is a binder with suggestions for walks and with hiking maps.

(4 US $ / person)

January 1st, 2012 Hostería Paraíso

We arrived in pouring rain and in thick fog at the Hosteria and parked our vehicle in the large car park. At dusk, someone came by and asked what we were doing here. As we asked if we could camp for the night in the parking lot this was agreed without any problems.

In the gold mining town of Zaruma. Better park the car outside of the historic center as there are very narrow and steep roads.

January 1st, 2012 Bosque Petrificado de Puyango

Along the river, about 1 km from the entrance of the park. The facility is brand new, the bathrooms were not yet in operation. Cold shower and clean toilets at the visitor center (400 m). Bird observation tower, benches and tables. Very helpful and caring employees.

The admission to the Petrified Forest costs an additional US $ 1 / person. Great hikes on boardwalks in the park. We were the only guests and received the key to the park gate from the Ranger.
