March 15th, 2020 TYPICA Café - Tostaduría

Very nice cafe with very good coffee! Nice inside patio. Had a very good flat white unlike we have had in Bolivia

March 12th, 2020 Very deep river crossing

These are not the correct coordinates but about 200 meters further west from here there was a very deep river crossing. Probably about 60 cm at the deepest point. We barely got through with our Toyota 4Runner with 4x4. Will obviously change a lot depending on the weather

March 12th, 2020 Road Tupiza-Uyuni by Laguna Colorada

Yes the road is very bad at places. Especially now in March after a lot of rain there are big cracks in the narrow road. I cannot imagine there being a possibility to drive during the worst part of the rain season. Places where there are no cracks the road is fine, but that is not very often. The road goes through mountains with high altitude a lot which you will definitely feel. Also, some parts are very very slippery. We drove through rain and snow and sometimes going 20 km per hour was the max to go because we were slipping away towards the steep drops a lot. Very scary. Also we got stuck in a river crossing really bad. It looked very dry and fine to cross but at the end our 4x4 4Runner got stuck really bad. We had to dig out the car for an hour and eventually managed to push it out with 3 people and the use of max tracks. So yes, definitely do not attempt with anything less than a good and strong 4x4 with high clearance AND good tires. Some very very sketchy parts. Also very deep river crossings which we barely made it through. We saw very little cars, probably 3 in the 11 hours of driving (yes, 11 hours) from Quitena Chico to Tupiza. I thought this is the route the tours take, but actually it looks like they might take another road.. Looking back it was a really cool roadtrip but definitely quite tough because of the roads, the weather, the altitude and the long days of driving. Also bring enough water, food, money and fuel. The small villages have things sometimes (especially water and snacks) but better not to count on it

March 11th, 2020 Lamphaya lodge andino

Updated information March 2020: nice owners. They have quite some rooms. We were with 4 and had 2 matrimonial rooms. 100 Bob per person. Very nice and clean rooms with private bathroom and hot shower. The lady cooked us dinner (vegetable soup, pasta with tomato sauce) for 20 bob per person and breakfast (pancakes) for 10 bob per person. Also sells 2L water bottles for 10 bob. Neighbor (exiting the gate go to the left) had gasoline. Only 20L for 8 bob per liter, no possibility to negotiate. Small shop there as well where we bought cookies and crackers.

March 10th, 2020 Hospedaje de los Andes

Nice place! Definitely better then we expected given the remoteness of the village and the look of things. Double room with shared bathroom for 40 per person. Including nice hot shower. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. Kitchen were you can use equipment. She also let us rinse of our car after we got a carwash which turned out to be salt water. Really sweet lady! Small shop were we bought water, chips, cookies and tomotoe saus

March 10th, 2020 Gasolina

Place for gasoline. Could not find any other place. The other place mentioned on iOverlander did not have any gas. She directed us to another place which wanted 10 per liter but then had a look and did not have anything. I asked a local and they directed us to this place. Nice lady which had some big jerrycans. She immediately said it would be 6 per liter and we could get 45 liters.

March 5th, 2020 Policía corrupta

Only needed to show tip and got a stamp on the back. Did not need to pay

March 4th, 2020 laguna colorada with Inca paintings

No water, no parking, no paintings. Seems like the wrong place. Nice landscape though. Drove to the actual Laguna viewpoint. 4wd needed for last km. No water

March 3rd, 2020 pacha manka

We could not find this place. I think it’s closed..

March 3rd, 2020 Aisito

Nice & cozy restaurant with local food. Menu with tasty empanadas as starter, local dish (3 choices) and budin cake. 430 peso. Also many other options on the menu. Cozy interior. Service not great. No coffee available.. Local musicians started at 9.30pm. Seemed like the only restaurant in the otherwise ghost town after 7pm. Opened around 8

March 1st, 2020 WARNING: Don’t take this road to the viaduct

Do not take these two roads to the viaduct. It took us about an hour to do the 12km. The road is not usable at parts because of landslides so you need to turn into the riverbed a few times. It’s very narrow (we had inches to spare with our toyota 4Runner), very bumpy and very steep. Without 4x4 and high clearance we would definitely not have made it. When we were going down we saw another road. Took us 10 minutes to get down on that road, super easy! Coming from San Antonio drive about 10km (not exactly sure) beyond this point and then turn right up the hill.

February 26th, 2020 Bad brothers wine experience

Really nice restaurant! Great place in Cafayate. Cozy inside garden patio. Very nice ambiance because of the lighting, music and garden. Good food. We had (with 2 people) entrana empanadas, chicken fingers, ozubuco, hamburger (beware it’s kind of small) and chocolate desert (yummie). With a bottle of wine, water en coffees for 2100 pesos. Felt a bit like eating at a quite fancy restaurant with not so fancy prices.

February 26th, 2020 Police control tries to get bribe

We were stopped about 3km north of this point. The officer first said our lights did not work properly. Then he said it was the big light. It did seem like one of them did not work properly which was wierd because it worked in the morning. He first told us to come to the police office 2 hours back south. Then he started writing a ticket with an amount of 6.500 pesos! We said we did not have that and it was not correct. After some minutes he started to scratch the ticket and write ‘anulado’ on the top and give us a handshake. Then he said, but you do need to give me 1.000 peso. We said no again. Then he gave us a hug and said we could go. I offered him Dutch cookies but he said he did not like sweets. Super strange

February 25th, 2020 self car wash

Good self carwash! There are 5 programs to choose from. Each cost 50 pesos. We used the simple water only program - 2 minutes. Vanessa, the sister of the owner, was there and very friendly and helpful. She is an English teacher and it was really nice talking to her. She also gave some cloth to dry the car a little after we washed it.

February 25th, 2020 Playa Lamaral

Nice place with beach club vibe. Stayed 1 night, it’s 600 a person (non negotiable). Quite a lot indeed but if you arrive early like we did (around 1) you can enjoy the place the whole day and it’s worth it. Check out is around 12. Nice places to relax in hammocks and look at the kite surfers. Toilet really nice and clean as well as the showers. Small kitchen with stove, sink, refrigerator and freezer. WiFi is slow. Apparently the wind mostly stops during the night since the place is famous for the very big winds during the day. We were unlucky and had wind all through the night. Since we have a rooftoptent that means we did not sleep much. Just something to keep in mind..

February 20th, 2020 Bournett Bodega

Nice family run winery. Originally one of the ladies said there is only a Spanish tour but then another member of the family took over which spoke a little English. She was super friendly and tried her very best to explain everything. It made it a very nice experience. She mentioned that there were mostly only argentinian tourists but she wanted to practice her English. The tour takes 1 hour and then you taste 2 wines. It’s free and after you can buy bottles. Recommended local experience!

February 19th, 2020 Short piece no asphalt

After the other part of road without asphalt this is another sudden part of gravel road (when driving South to North). Only about 50 meters.

February 19th, 2020 supermarket

Went to the supermarket across the street from these coordinates twice. Really big and good supermarket with large selection of products.

February 19th, 2020 Ripio starts/ends

This location is a bit wrong. Asphalt starts 1,5 km more to the North.

February 18th, 2020 Road 95S-61S

Roadworks when we were there which meant quite some waiting and passing big trucks at work. Road itself in bad condition. Driving about 30km/h. Last part from Chile to the border (or first part when coming from Argentina) is a bit better.
Road from Pucon/Villarrica was a nice road but the ripio on this last part is definitely not good.

February 18th, 2020 Panadería/Bakery Rostock

Nice bakery. Bought 4 Italian buns for 600 pesos. Nice store with many options and also sweets

February 18th, 2020 Spectacular Spot

Really nice. Try to go with good weather though. We have a rooftop tent and the wind was crazy (almost decided to sleep in the car) and very cold. It luckily calmed down after a few hours and in the morning it was beautiful. Road up is bad and for the last 250 meters to the exact spot you definitely need 4x4. Kind of feels like you are not supposed to go there but it’s obvious that cars have driven. We woke up early, parked the car a bit further down where other cars were parked the day before and did the 3 hour hike. Really good views all around!

February 17th, 2020 Mamuil Malal border Chile

Very long queue on a Monday afternoon. Took almost 2 hours total to get in of which the first hour was waiting to get ‘into’ the Argentina border section. Passing itself was fine. Chile side has strict checks of cars. Need to put all your bags inside through a scan and an agent checks the rest of the car.

February 13th, 2020 El Mexicano

Nice place if you are looking for something different. Nachos were not that special, just chips with some dips. Would not really recommend that (for the price of 450). However, the taco’s were delicious. We shared the beef tacos; 850 pesos.

February 12th, 2020 Los Ventisqueros

Restaurant at the base of Cerro Tronador. From here you have a view of the mountain with the glaciers and there are 2 short trails to walk. The restaurant serves food and they have very nice pies for a good price!

February 12th, 2020 Antares

Nice place, nice staff, very good burgers and different kind of beers to choose from.

February 12th, 2020 Área Mascardi - PN Nahuel Huapi

Entrance is now 400 pesos per person. Road is gravel but definitely not that bad. Last 10 km to Pampa Linda is a bit bad and the final road to Ventisquero Negro and base of Cerro Tronador is worse but overall not worse than other roads we have driven. High clearance is preferable, 4x4 not needed. The park is quite nice, highlights are the Ventisquero Negro and the view from the base of Tronador. Not comparable to other parks more South though.

February 11th, 2020 This location is NOT Cohuin-co but a small no name camping aside river

Not sure if we are in the wrong place or if the comments are wrong. We are at the exact coordinates and there indeed is a small camping at the river. There however are no showers/bathrooms, only a small wooden hut with a toilet. Small grassy area at the river, just big enough for our 4x4 with rooftop tent to fit through. We were the only visitors and paid 200 per person. Feels remote and local.

February 9th, 2020 Blue river green grass

Best wild camping spot we had so far! Tip: drive through a bit further to the right when you get to the water (might need 4x4 if grass is wet like with us) to get to another flat area with fire pit. Stayed 2 nights.

February 8th, 2020 Volcan Chaiten Sendero

The hike is nice and the view on top is really beautiful. However, the horse flies were terrible. Could not stand still for 10 seconds. All people we saw on the trail were clearly also very annoyed. Made us walk really fast so managed to do the round trip in 2 hours. Not the best experience and actually only saw how beautiful it was when looking at the pictures afterwards. Advice to go early morning to avoid the horse flies a bit and escape the heat (in summer).
