December 18th, 2020 Pilot Travel Center

Standard truck stop that will do in a pinch. Very busy with lots of trucks so expect some noise. We parked in the back lot along the lefthand side to leave room for the trucks. Didn't see any other travels here, but no one bothered us.

December 17th, 2020 confluence point of the Ohio and Mississippi river

Nice little spot with a stellar view. It is basically a large parking lot with no amenities, but good cell service on ATT. It is fun to watch the tug boats throughout the day. Not sure if it’s 100% legit to stay, but no “no overnight parking” signs anywhere.

December 16th, 2020 rest area on US 400

Dump is open and free. Currently no water at dump station, but might only be due to winter.

December 16th, 2020 Flying J Truck Stop

Just a normal truck stop. This one is particularly busy so we parked in the gas station parking lot with a few other rigs and no one bothered us. Regular truck stop and highway noise.

December 15th, 2020 Cabela's

Spent one night here in the RV spots right next to the dump. Pretty quiet and no one bothered us. I’d recommend showing up after the store closes because employees also park in these spots so it can be very obvious you are staying here.

December 14th, 2020 Gravel Turnout - Illinois River

We didn’t stay the night here, but definitely wished we did. It is a true winter wonderland right now and easily accessible in our 2WD sprinter. Good cell service on ATT.

December 14th, 2020 Parking Hard Rock Hotel and casino

Looooove a free dump! Fully functional in the dead of winter with portable water and trash too.

December 14th, 2020 Bluestem Lake

Weird place. Followed the GPS directions to what looked like a city park with picnic tables and grills, but not obvious camping spots. Drove past the oil rig and saw the sign saying it was $5 to camp, but still no camping spots. We called the number on the sign (918-287-4692) and it was disconnected. We ended up sleeping in the cul de sac by the first bathrooms and no one bothered us.

Update: Police officer came by around 9 AM and said you need to have a camping permit to stay here. He did not know how much it was, but you can get one by calling police dispatch at 918-287-4545. We went to the police station in town and paid the $5 fee.

December 13th, 2020 Walmart Super Store

Who doesn’t want to sleep at a Walmart parking lot in the birthplace of Walmart? We asked the cashier and she said it was fine to stay. Some loud noise for the semis and snow plows, but still a safe and easy place to spend the night.

December 12th, 2020 Gulpha Gorge NP Campground

Established campground run by the national park service. Not much privacy between sites, but in a wooded setting next to a creek. All sites appeared to have water, electric, and a dump. Flush toilets and garbage available, but no showers. Minimal cell service on ATT. Regular price is $30 per night, but we paid $15 with our America the Beautiful pass.

December 11th, 2020 Buck knob Rd in Ouachita NF

A simple clearing in the woods off the side of a dirt road. Road is narrow, but easily accessible by most rigs. Only five minutes off the highway which is nice. No amenities aside from a fire ring. Two bars of service on ATT.

December 9th, 2020 Table Rock State Park

Two large campgrounds on the lake about 15 minutes from Branson. Potable water, dump, dumpsters, walking trails, and playground available in the winter; showers and bathrooms only open in the summer. $12 per night in off-season for a dry site. 50 amp electric hook-ups available. Decent cell service on ATT. Pay at the office, but if they are closed you can pay the next morning. Be sure to pay early or the camp host will hound you until you do.

December 8th, 2020 Lake of the Ozarks State Park

This is the only Lake of the Ozarks campground that is open right now (not sure if due to COVID-19 or off-season). Price is still $12 per night for dry camping. Very quiet this time of year with only three other groups in the entire campground. Plenty of spots right on the lake with great views of the amazing sunsets. Pit toilets, garbage, potable water, fire pits, and playground are open. Showers and dump only available in the summer. Minimal cell service on ATT.

December 7th, 2020 Mark Twain NF - Elliot - 342

This spot was fine for a night. Simply a clearing off the side of a dirt road with a little bit of garbage. Easily accessible in a 2WD 170” Sprinter, but looks like it could get muddy if it rains. We heard a lot of gunshots when we first arrived, sounded like a target range might be near by, but they stopped when it got dark out. No amenities and limited cell service on ATT. Free!

December 6th, 2020 St. Joe State Park

Large Missouri state park with two campgrounds, potable water, showers, garbage, electricity hook-ups, and a dump. Open year round and when we arrived there was no one in either campground. No one was in the office either so we just paid the next day and they were fine with it. This is advertised as an OHV campground so might be busy in the summer. State park website says there is no water available in the winter, but there are several no-frost taps that worked in December. Minimal cell service on ATT. $12.00 per night for a dry site.

December 5th, 2020 Walmart with park lanes for RV

Stayed here last night without incident. Didn’t see any signs about overnight parking and there were more semis here than at most truck stops. Obvious noise from the trucks, but a safe and convenient place to stop for the night.

December 4th, 2020 Blue chip Casino

Stayed here for a second time and once again no issues. You do not have to check in with security and unless you are very obvious they have no way to know if you are staying at the hotel casino or not. We still go in and play a round or buy a drink just out of curtesy.

November 11th, 2020 police stop

Got stopped by a police officer who appeared to be pulling over most vehicles. He repeatedly asked us for our passports, but we did not have them. I believe he wanted to give us a harder time, but since we told him none of us spoke Spanish he let us go.

October 15th, 2020 Ohio Welcome Center Service Plaza

Spot does it’s job in a pinch. I’d say one of the louder rest stops we’ve slept at.

October 14th, 2020 Little Fort - George Washington NF

Great free campground. It is quite a ways off the highway, but good for some peace and quiet. Only one other campsite was taken when we arrived on a Wednesday. There is a pit toilet and single garbage can. No cell phone service.

October 13th, 2020 I-95 Rest Area

Decent spot for an overnight. Expect some noise as it is a busy place and in close proximity to the highway. No time restrictions. Convenience store is open 24/7.

October 11th, 2020 Huntington Sewer Treatment Plant

90% sure this place is no longer open to the public. Multiple signs saying you need to have a CDL, registered commercial vehicle, on file credit card, etc. No one around to ask on a Sunday so we dumped our 5 gallon portable toilet and ran. Maybe try calling if you can find a number online.

October 10th, 2020 brooklyn waterfront

Beautiful view of the city, however around 9 PM there was a large group of men hanging out who watched us get into our van. Shortly after they began harassing us by beating on the sides of our van and throwing hard objects at our windows (at least one was a golf ball size rock). We have a child with us so we ended up calling police and leaving as we were afraid of retaliation. Since moving into our van ten months ago this is our first instance of direct aggression and it left us pretty shaken. This is a dead end street with no people around and only one entrance/exit. If we had not been parked facing the street we would not have been able to escape this situation. Seems like this spot works for some people, but we moved towards McCarren Park and had no issues.

October 10th, 2020 McCarren Park Free Street Parking

We had a scary situation happen at the “brooklyn waterfront” pin so we headed towards McCarren Park for two nights and it was awesome. Even on a Saturday night there were tons of large spots to park our sprinter. Honestly one of the quietest sleeps we have had and we couldn’t believe we woke up in NYC. Very short walk to bars, restaurants, and less than 500 ft from Nassau subway station.

October 7th, 2020 Mohegan Sun Casino

Great place for an overnight. I think the RV lot is currently closed, but just follow the signs for self-parking or “winter parking” and you will get to the big surface lot in the back. We didn’t have to check in with anyone and there were several other vans and RV here overnight. No amenities, but definitely go in and check out the casino. It is huge and family friendly. Also free WiFi even in the parking lot!

We ended up spending two nights without any issues.

October 6th, 2020 I-495 Rest Area

Easy access rest area not far from Lowell, MA. Didn’t see any over night restrictions. Some highway noise, but not the worst. Picnic tables and restrooms available.

October 5th, 2020 Old cherry mountain Road, 10 places

We stayed at spot #3 and it is great free camping near Mt. Washington. This site would be awesome for group camping as it is huge! The first two sites get cell services, but nothing after that. No amenities, but we aren’t complaining.

October 3rd, 2020 Walmart Supercenter

Definitely seems like the place to be for vans and RV! Spent one night here with at least 20 other overlanders. No issues and slept great. Save yourself some money by staying here while visiting Acadia NP.

October 2nd, 2020 Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA

Well established campground right on the water. They allow self-contained vans to park in tent spots, but the price is steep at $59+taxes per night (does include water and electric). They have a dump, potable water, showers, wifi, a restaurant, general store, dog park, and paid laundry. Staff puts on fun activities in the evenings, such as s’mores and pumpkin painting. Check their website for reservations as it was completely full this past weekend.

September 29th, 2020 Austin brook national forest campsite

This place is so dreamy we ended up spending two nights here. After you turn off the highway take the first right to find the four campsites. If you go further up the road there are a few dispersed campsites, but no room for a car. If you are in the area during the fall this is a must stop! Limit call service on ATT and no amenities.
